TOC under fire for leading “campaign” against Singapore government
Singapore’s foremost anti-government blog “The Online Citizen” (TOC) has come under fire for leading a “campaign” against the Singapore government.
A Singaporean by the name of Daniel Wong has lodged a complaint to several government agencies including the Ministry of Home Affairs, Attorney-General Chambers and Ministry of Information, Communication and Arts about TOC’s activities and funding. (read letter here)
Daniel asked if it is legal for TOC to organize “public campaigns” against the Singapore government, citing TOC’s campaign against the mandatory death penalty held today at Hong Lim Park as an example.
He also questioned the source of TOC’s funding:
“I am concerned that TOC may receive funding from foreign organizations and agencies which harbor nefarious motives to influence public opinion to advocate for the overthrowing of the legitimate government of Singapore.”
The letter was forwarded to TOC as well as a number of alternative news sites in Singapore.
From the content of the letter, it does appear that Daniel may be a member of the establishment and it may be a preclude to an imminent crackdown.
The standard modus operandi of the PAP is to get a bureaucrat to lodge an official complaint first so that its agencies have sufficient grounds to take concrete action.
For example, an official from MDA lodged a police report against British author Mr Alan Shadrake’s book which led the AGC to charge the latter for “contempt of court”.
As a netizen Mark Chee put it succinctly:
“We need to understand how our authorities work. They will only initiate action when there is a complaint, otherwise they will be seen oppressive. So now, they have a “legitimate” complainant who is perturbed by TOC’s articles. Although the complaint might be malicious, be prepared.”

Ahh . . . Election is definitely not too far away. This is probably part of their strategy to silence the critics before the election.
If not silence, at least they want to put some pressure on these critics to tone down by using fear and threats of police action.

I am not surprised but he the right to do as a citizen of our Modern Singapore and we on the other hand, being an Ordinary citizen of our Modern Singapore, has the write to write or blog so long as what we have written are objective, contructive, fact and truth, we are no longer in the Dark Ages where information are scarce and soley depend on the mainstream medias such as newspapers,tv and radio, now we have the alternative called internet and just anyone can have excess to information which first called rumours and at the end of the day proves to be true.

Ordinary Singaporean
Daniel , how about so many complain aboout, high pay, freak event , Mas Selamat, Dr Alan Ooi, billions loss. TOC is just another website of the thousand of website, if you don’t like it , don’t read. Stop the crap about this and that, get on with life. Life is Sg is not just pap and daft like you. If you are human or care so much, go out and offer your help to the old, the poor the needy. If you don’t walk your talk. Keep your axx shut up.
Mr Daniel Wong is right. TOC should be shut down.
Fucking Weasels.
FAP dogs on the hunt now!! GE is coming!!! Oh yeah!
Daniel should migrate to North Korea or Mynamar. There, he will find his “utopia” where there will be no criticism against the ruling party and he can spend his time looking for food and medical facilities!
What a sick joke.
Certainly got all the signs of PAP play acting a complaint and follow-up reaction written all over it.
If it’s a case of foreigners ruining our lives…Tell me.
#where do I complain that foreigners are stealing our jobs and education?
#where do I complain that I cannot compete with foreigners for HDB?
#where do I complain foreigners are depriving me of a decent ride in MRT and buses?
…..and so on and so forth.
It is already an act of treason that PAP replaces locals with foreigners as voters.
Who than will hang the hangman?
PAP as usual is using underhand methods to deal with anything that is anti-pap. A very “concerned” citizen writes to the government to complain about TOC. Since when anti-pap=treason? No logic.
We’ve got the SPF investigating anti-pap leaflets this year and recently a cyberattack on TR. Is pap trying to wipe out voices of opposition?
The governement has on many occassions encouraged true blue Singaporeans(served the nation NS) to give constructive feedbacks and it is exactly what is being done. Nobody on this site has the financial clout and manpower to overthrow the government.ST has recieved letters on flood, SMRT, HDB, 2n Language, higher bills, loss of jobs etc are these feedbacks meant to be taken as Singaporeans are planning something. Daniel you should be taken by the police and investigated for false accusation and locked up for good. It is people like you that is setting bad example. This young nation need to be crative and being creative means to speak your mind as long as one does not defame, and respect all race, language and religion. Now on the Mandatory daeth sentence it is not an uprising, the hamane feeling for another. If it was your son I believe you will be there to plead for leniency just like all who have signed the petition on line. Stop this shit Daniel and the government is not stupid as you to take your complaint as gospel truth. If you want to be recognised do it with merit. This is an act of a low down crap. Peace n Love. Wake up and apologise to allSingaporeans for your selfish act.
PR Citizen,
you are one worthless individual, please GO BACK HOME QUICKLY to your Malaysian hometown. Especially if you are so unhappy here. Call yourself a FT but in reality you are just a kuching kurap engineer who can’t fit in despite an 8-year stint here, no big deal and you’re not gonna be missed one bit. I suspect its because of your bad work attitude that’s the root cause of your disgruntlement, and taking it out on all and sundry here in TR/TOC (an opinion platform of ordinary SGporeans) is as usual just your cheap shot.
Can one be a PR and a Citizen at the same time ?
Why will one PRetend to be a PR and a Citizen at the same time ?
Is this a license for another one of those foreign dogs to be no more then a PRostitute Citizen that is worst then the 3rd Class Singaporeans ?
It will not be a surprise if the PRostitute within the pseudo Citizen will support another one of its kind – seen in a “Daniel Wong” – who will prostitute their values in defense of the Pro Alien Party.
Errr.. what? I thought TR is the leading the fight against PAP. TOC is a little more “moderate” what.
It is nothing new that complain is being lodged against TOC. It already happened many times in the past.
Does that mean they should be cowed and go into oblivion? Far from it.
Contrary to what others thinking, it is indeed a field day if the government take some action. That will be the time when TOC can hit record viewership and truly becomes the Singaporekini way ahead of Temasek Review.
The right of citizens to challenge change in a civilize way by appealing for support of a cause does not deserve such unjustified effort by a fellow citizen. The motive of the complainant is however questionable. He hates the existence of alternative voice. To him government should be the sole voice for the people and others should not make any noise.
This is a challenge to the netcitizen’s solidarity. Should we align with those who have sacrificed their time and effort to endeavor in introducing soul to the body of Singapore or to forsake them? We have to examine our own backbone.
This type of article and such gain to intimidate would be activist and people who otherwise would want to do something for society. It makes people scared and therefore stop wanting to avail themselves for society. TOC is not an anti PAP site, the anti PAP sentiments come from the ground which has nothing to do with them. They acted responsibly and have nothing to fear. However it is not the same breadth should you compare it with Temasek Review. The latter has little future in Singapore should it not want to step out and act responsibly. Comparing the readers of the two sites, TOC has a far more mature readers and committed writers who are engaging in real people’s affair. However to be fair all these sites have to be given chance to grow.
As for foreign funds and all, probably you can call any anti PAP blogs as being funded by foreigners. You can also say every opposition party as a foreign stooge. You need to substantiate it in order to count otherwise it is just simply gossip and nothing else. Should the government respond to such unsubstantiated leads and go after every one, they may end up in a wild goose chase.
Closing down one TOC will only gain more sites that act anonymously and irresponsibly. They will become combative and ruthless. That does not bore well for Singapore’s future. By fighting for the weak against the strong and mighty will give credence to site like TOC. They will grow from the ash and become a phoenix and truly become a voice for Singapore.
“Let us get down to fundamentals.
Is this an open, or is this a closed society?
Is it a society where men can preach ideas – novel, unorthodox, heresies, to established churches and established governments – where there is a constant contest for men’s hearts and minds on the basis of what is right, of what is just, of what is in the national interests, or is it a closed society where the mass media – the newspapaers, the journals, publications, TV, radio – either bound by sound or by sight, or both sound and sight, men’s minds are fed with a constant drone of sycophantic support for a particular orthodox political philosophy?
That is the first question we asked ourselves. I would like to see minds stimulated and debate provoked, and truth refined and crystallized out of the conflict of different evidence and views.
I, therefore, welcome every and any opportunity of a chance to agree, or to dissent, in order that out of thesis comes synthesis – thesis, anti-major premise, anti-premise, synthesis, so we progress…
I welcome every opportunity to meet members of the opposition, and so do members of my party, over the radio, over the television, university forums, public rallies. We never run away from the open encounter.
If your ideas, your views cannot stand the challenge of criticism then they are too fragile and not sturdy enough to last.
I am talking of the principle of the open society, the open debate, ideas, not intimidation, persuasion not coercion…
Sir, the basic fundamentals we asked ourselves…is whether the duties of the Minister of Information and Broadcasting are to produce closed minds or open minds, because these instruments – the mass media, the TV, the radio – can produce either the open minds receptive to ideas and ideals, a democratic system of life, or closed and limited.
But I know that the open debate is a painful process for closed minds…
But let me make this point: that 5 million adult minds in Malaysia cannot be closed – definitely not in the lifetime of the people in authority.
It is not possible because whatever the faults of the colonial system, and there are many…they generated the open mind, the inquiring mind.”
- Lee Kuan Yew Dec 18, 1964 Malaysian Parliamentary Debates
.
.
.
Yes, whatever the faults of the Colonial System – they generated the open mind, the inquiring mind.
Can Singapore hope to further progress into the future with a closed mind that is preferred by the Pro Alien Party too afraid of the enquiring politically active minds ?
@ mes,
Agreed, TOC is more “moderate” and tends to be more pro-foreign a**holes. Some of TOC’s stances, like gay rights, anti-death penalty, pro-x’tian sentiments, pro-vegetarian, pro-foreigner rights aren’t exactly that popular with most Singaporeans. Wouldn’t consider TOC the “foremost anti-government blog” – just look at the alexa rankings and u know that TR gets a whole lot more traffic!
U tend to see TOC featured more in SPH (Singapore Propaganda House) newspapers – maybe TOC is seen as “approved” “anti-PAP” blog, just like how Chiam and Low are “approved” opposition who are basically relatively “tame” and don’t make Singapore lose face on the international scene, unlike JBJ and Chee SJ.
PAP doggies using the same “XYZ is being funded by FOREIGNERS to ‘destroy’ Singapore” accusation like they tried with SDP! PAP is using OUR money to destroy Singapore and these PAP scums don’t even complain!
How come I lodge a couple of police reports for someone who hurt me, trespassed into our personnel only office space, and sends malicious poison pen smss and they tell me that it my only recourse is to to go a civil court and then immediately take action against TOC who never physically hurt anyone and just voicing their concerns and unhappiness??
How come ah? Can Wong Kan Seng or someone from Home Affairs comment?
Just because someone is critical of some government policies doesn’t mean they are anti-government lah. Where is this Daniel Wong educated, zimbabwe ? It’s like saying that just because someone like China, they must be communist. What an A-HOLE !!!
Obviously in any democracy there will be people who are unhappy with the government some of the time.
TOC is not a people’s BLOG as compared to TR with all its shortcomings is free falling and gung ho giving anyone from anyplace a say.
TOC will survive the way SDP blog will survive as there is not much difference except in NAME.
For those who criticize PR citizen.
You do realise this person is engaging in satire right? He adopts a guise as an ungrateful foreigner who has been granted Singaporean citizenship and then says all kinds of stupid things. These serve to highlight what PR citizen sees as problems in Singapore.
Its the same technique Jonathan Swift employed to highlight issues of poverty in Ireland (http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html).
I am not PR citizen.
mes, JOBS FOR FOREIGNERS, NS FOR SINGAPOREANS
Share yr views on Toc versus TR. BTW ToC would never allow yr comments. TR practices what it preaches. ToC reminds me of PAP and Tan Kin Lian, talk one thing, do another.
Complaint against TOC based on PURE WILD SPECULATION (not the slightest shred of evidence) of …”MAY” receive funding from foreign organizations and agencies which harbor nefarious motives to influence public opinion to advocate for the overthrowing of the legitimate government of Singapore.”
Can TOC then launch a counter law action of this complaint “MAY” engage in criminal intimidation of no evidence and that MDA should NOT be part of this illegal harassment based on allegations sustained only by frivolous wild speculations and without substance?
Can someone made a police complaint against a known gay activist and the AGC acted thereupon on grounds that the accused “MAY” engage in illicit anal sex?
Looks like someone is speculatively seeking towards turning the application and due process of law into something itchy and anal of political incorrectness. Or is it NOT?
Can I complain against Shitty Times for feeding us PAPies propaganda for so many years. Shitty Times were allowed to spin news in favour of gahment so what wrong with TOC reporting their opinions.
We need alternative media and cannot depend on Shitty Times to deliver period.
@Chin Tu Lang:
No chance, kawan. No chance.
The gahmen has the “staits times” all wrapped up.
All the editors scared..to lose their jobs, their cpf , their long service.
Big Boss sitting upstairs ..just jaga…what they publish.
Hello..they need permission .just to go to..toilet..lah.
Would you becomne a hero..in their position!!
Nothing will change.
Sad but true.
I believe they have their hands full with Mr Alan Shadrake.
Why create more bad publicity before YOG?
what… SG-reans not entitled to their views is it?
if u so unhappy, just emigrate and take your CPF with you. see if u happier in a new country
So when will it be TR’s turn oto face the music?
This is bullshit!!!
KR
@PR citizen,
First and foremost, I am a PR in UK and still holding my SG passport and is not thinking to give it up, therefore I have all the rights to comment on any SG issues, having said that, UK govt. granted me the right to vote as an UK citizen and comment on anything if I wish to do so, the only different is I’m not holding an UK passport (eventhough this country allows dual citizenship, but not Singapore).
Nonetheless, I would never pass impolite remarks towards any UK citizens whether verbally or in any form of communication, anyways, u dun see any sites like TR and TOC in UK, as freedom of speech or freedom of assembly is not prohibited in this country!
You are not given such right (to vote) or comment on any political agenda, so please refrain yourself and shut your gap!
this guy is beyond hope.
he is daft like LKY said of people like him.
got screwed by his govt and yet so fond of the people who kicked his arse….damn donkey.
What’s wrong if TR or TOC attempts to counter-balance the imbalances of this govt whom the people elected in good faith to protect their interests but whose ministers and members prefer to take sides with foreigners at the expense oof the average singaporean?
mistakes need to be corrected, need to be rectified and make good, whether the mistakes are committed by common people or by govt officials.Even more so,people elected to govern and paid heftily for doing do should not do things that go gainst the interests of those who voted them and even pay their salaries.
this is utter rubbish unheard of in any other FIRST WORLD COUNTRY or an aspriring FIRST WORLD country like Singapore.
I dare say we went from bad to good and good to better and now the current leaders are reverse all the hard work of NATION BUILDING and we got from almost best to bad and getting worse and worse.
this degradation occurring even as the MIW clowns’ big fat pay got bigger and bigger until it now takes a real FIRST WORLD LEADER like OBAMA to work forever to attain the same annual pay?
this country is getting stranger in allsense of the word;not only are the govt policies getting stranger, there are MORE ’strangers’ too in our midst and against our wills.
GOOD BETTER BEST IS REALLY BAD WORSE WORST it seems here.

If we all migrates, only frogs will be left in this well.
To SG in UK: You don’t pass impolite remarks in UK cause the people there behave like people not like the dogs i came across here in Singapore. I don’t think the people in UK look down at you unlike here where they think that a typical Malaysian is a factory worker.
They have no respect for us forigen talents and i am sick and tired of their nonsense so i speak my mind. We are like C.Rolandos in Manchester United, more talented than any player in England, yet they do not respect us just becuase we are not forced to do NS.
I got all As for my SPM and was given a paid scholarship to do engineering in NTU and then i have to serve a bond of 2 yrs and then afterwards i bulid my way up but yet these Singaporean dogs mock at me just becuase i never do NS.
These cowards know that the government will cane their asses if they never do NS, so they shut up and serve. Then they think, that they are entitled to the best jobs, when they are lazy and useless and demand high pay for the jobs that they do even though they have no experience.
So when they see a successful and talented PR like me, they get so jealous and pass rude remarks cuase of their stupid mindset, even though they know that i am better than 3 local Singaporean Engineers, cause they think that forgieners are only supposed to jobs that the locals shun.
If these Singaporean coward dogs wanted, they could have changed the government anytime, but have no balls to do, so they bark like crazy while taking no action. I rather side with the PAP since they are replacing Singaporeans with better citizens like me, who are successful.
Just like Mr Sihna Sekhar said, when you walk past a dog and it barks at you, just ignore it. For me, i like to make fun and taunt at the dog, reminding the dog that is only a dog. That is what you Singaporeans are. You cannot stop the PAP and you cannot stop us Forgien talents coming here and to take over Singaporeans.
Since you singaporeans have this lame mindset about us, it will you Singaporeans that in the end, do jobs that is located for Singaporeans, like Karung Guni man, Hawkers and Can collecters. Each time i see all these Singaporeans i know more and more Singaporeans will later give them competion in these jobs.
I am just being loyal to the government who gave me these chances to succeed. Stop blaming the PAP for your lack of talent. If you are talented, most people want to employ you.
I know that the PAP will win the next election because Singaporens cannot step up when it matters the most and they can’t care for other fellow Singaporeans. All the government workers will vote for PAP cause they have no choice. Stop barking like mad dogs and let us forgien talents bring Singapore forward.
Can we all use a bit of our brains, if any of us have any ?
First of all we do not know their real identities or motives. Citizen can be PR & PR can be a citizen. Equally, the PAP running dogs can also masquerade as any of us to stir our emotions and in the heat of exchanges, maybe will give the police or ISD an excuse to hijack the website.
Remember all we need is a pinch of salt when we read any of the posted comments. If the PAP dogs want to bark here, just let them bark lor.
To understand your enemy is the best strategy to deal with them.
From one local dog to another foreigner dog (PR Citizen)
Guess you are right, now that you got the bigger bone that your masters throw at you, you can open your doggie mouth and howl all you like…one fine day your master will find a new pet and don’t say we never warn you. What goes around will comes around.
All of us are dogs, you just a foreigner one only in the eyes of the PAP elites…if you so damn talented like you said you were, why are you not back in your own country and still bothered to come here to doggie land and knock heads with the mad dogs, aren’t you afraid that the virus will pass to you…haha
One foreigner dog barking at the local dogs, what a joke hahaha
Don’t worry i won’t remain here for long, at the most another 3 yrs before i secure my dream move to Canada. I am always among the best. From Malaysia to Singapore to Canada. Talent takes you places. The main reason i came to Singapore cause it is a stepping stone for me to go to Canada as it is easier to get citizenship in Canada when you have a Singapore PR citizenship
You Singaporeans can stay here and bark to yr hearts content and i don’t need to listen to them soon.
@PR CITIZEN:
August 2, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Since you abandoned your motherland, and want to be another dog in Canada…please go!! I hope you will be eaten by their wolves in the wilderness!!
@PR CITIZEN: August 2, 2010 at 10:46 am
Which country did you come from, or are you simply too embarrassed of your own country of origin ?
How much have you contribute to your own country, or are you like a pariah dog that simply will offer your butts to the next dog willing to mount you when needed ?
Was it about Singaporeans without the guts to change the government ?
Clearly, you know nothing about the Pro Alien Party methods in gerrymeandering and manipulating the Electoral System, the use of the Internal Security Act towards their political opponents with no avenues for reviews, the manipulating of the judicial system to bankrupt political challengers, and incarcerate activists into mental institution.
Or are you slowly awakening to the Singapore Ways, and decide to move on to Canada, but too proud to admit by lowering your tail to protect your butt from being ripped apart ?
What? TOC is the “Singapore’s foremost anti-government blog”? Come on lah, even my toes are laughing. TR is the indisputable NO.1 ANTI-GOVERNMENT BLOG! No doubt about it. TOC only comes in a distant second.
@PR CITIZEN
>>> “I am always among the best. From Malaysia to Singapore to Canada. Talent takes you places. The main reason i came to Singapore cause it is a stepping stone for me to go to Canada as it is easier to get citizenship in Canada when you have a Singapore PR citizenship”..
Your statement just tell me that you are not among the best.. The best don’t need to use singapore as stepping stone.. They go DIRECT.. Just think, it is so easy to get singapore citizenship and pr nowadays, even construction workers, can do that, so what talent are you talking about..
Please ah, PR Citizen is just trying to show off, why bother with
such foreign haba dogs.Only people with no real talent have to show off, just like people with not much wealth have to decorate themselves with jewelry, to cover up their insecurity.
You could bet this haba dog would return to home country and trumpet how much his pay is in Singapore. Just piss this dog off.
Get to the root of our problem, being labelled anti-Singaporean.
Govt would not be able to shut down TR, as the website is based in
Hongkong. Could easily set up another one. Shut one, then open another one. Unless Govt shut down the whole internet.
Throughout the case of Yong Vui Kong, TOC had already set out to mislead it readers and those who they are trying to lobby in opposing the death penalty. They keep harping that Vui Kong was ignorant of his crime, that he does not know what he was carrying and most of all, that it was Vui Kong;s first offence.
But the facts is, Vui Kong was totally aware of what he was doing, and he was overcome by his greed more than his thoughts of “earning some money for his mother”. He had done his drug runs many times and fortunately, he was finally caught in one of his runs.
I had asked TOC to dispute and refute the facts presented by the Minsitry Of Law (see below), and challenged their staements and their evidences, instead of trying to mislead its readers…TOC was obviously out to discredit Singapore and our judiciary system, and not really in saving Vui Kong, who was merely a tool that TOC had despicably used to achieve their agenda (and maybe with lots of help and financing from foreign forces).
==============================
Evidence was led in Court to show that Mr Yong has trafficked in heroin on other previous occasions, before he was arrested on 13 June 2007. In addition, on the day he was arrested, he had already made two drug deliveries to customers. Questioned by police, he exonerated the friend who drove him to the delivery venues. The High Court found that he knew, (beyond reasonable doubt), what he was doing. He was trafficking a large amount of heroin (in excess of 47 grams) and had been doing it regularly for profit. Mr Yong withdrew his appeal against the conviction. His counsel sent a letter to the Court of Appeal (dated 23 April 2009) withdrawing Mr Yong’s appeal. The letter stated that Mr Yong had “indicated his desire not to proceed with the appeal as he had while serving sentence embraced Buddhism. With his new found faith, he said he felt uneasy and had no peace of mind if he were to proceed with his appeal.” Mr Yong in his Petition for Clemency to the President (dated 11 August 2009) stated that, after his conversion to Buddhism, he “…realised that he must not continue to lie”, and that “he should have the courage to own up to what he did”.

Everybody has agenda including yourself and pap gov. If you don’t have why bother to write.
TOC is trying to safe a young man life. To err is human. If you kill someone.. there will be blood in your hand. … Karma will set upon those who kill. Just a matter of when. Liao Fan Story – go and read it.
What’s there to worry about? A crackdown?
If TOC’s articles are true and contains nothing but the truth, they can remain steadfast and unyielding to oppressive forces!
Prepare for the DARK FORCES of the ISD, foot soldiers of the OLD MAN, to descend on the TOC soon!

If we all migrates, only frogs will be left in this well./
do not make it sound as though the ones leaving are the Crème de la crème and the ones staying are worst off.
there are a lot of act-very-blur who are able to capitalize and take advantage of the niche that they have managed to find for themselves – e.g small business owners like hawkers, ah bengs & ah lians who X no. of properties who are quitely laughing away.
this frog analogy is getting more lame & stale each day. it is more of a fight for space, survival & resources or the prevention of them being taken away from you.
are you a frog ?:

What’s there to worry about? A crackdown?
“If TOC’s articles are true and contains nothing but the truth, they can remain steadfast and unyielding to oppressive forces!”
The crackdown will come when the truth hurts, e.g. the legal action by LKY and LHL against the foreign newspaper for stating a fact (LHL is the son of LKY). And the draconian laws enacted in SIN curbing the civil liberties are there primarily to prevent people from finding out the truths and stating the truths.

“do not make it sound as though the ones leaving are the Crème de la crème and the ones staying are worst off. ”
You are right, I had relatives with little education who are worth millions. They are not bothered with the govt. They will survive regardless of the costs of living in sin. SIN is a place for the rich, with or without ‘talent’.
Unfortunately I am not rich but good enough to find my own niche overseas.
