Young Democrats: Cease harassment of Rachel Zeng

Author: With reference to the reports where the anti-death penalty campaigner, Ms Rachel Zeng, suspects that she is being harassed and is under surveillance for her activist work, the Young Democrats stands behind her in solidarity and offer her our fullest support for her contributions towards civil society in Singapore.
As fellow socially-aware youths working towards socio-political change in Singapore, we condemn the alleged harassment towards Ms Zeng and demand that the perpetrators responsible cease and desist immediately.
It is an action that is uncalled for in this civilized society. Any organization, agency, or entity that wishes to express displeasure at the activist work that she is doing and the values she espouses ought to do so in the open. The public should be the one to decide on whether she is doing the right thing or not.
Resorting to such underhanded means to intimidate activists only serves to lend further credence to her work and gives further impetus for other activists like her to persevere.
Activists play an important role in our society by bringing to awareness important issues in the greater society that otherwise would have been overlooked by citizens during their day to day struggles.
It is because of this that we stand behind all activists who are putting in their own valuable private time to work for the betterment of Singapore’s society.
It is a thankless duty that they have taken upon themselves and they should be allowed to conduct their activities free from harassment and molestation as long as neither violence nor hatred is espoused and propagated.
To this end, it is our hope that the harassment of Ms Zeng stop and the Young Democrats will continue to speak up and stand in solidarity with all social and political activists in Singapore.
On a related note, the Young Democrats also expresses our concern at the curtailment of freedom of expression with the arrest of the British author, Mr Alan Shadrake, in connection with his latest book, Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock.
A British national, the author has compiled and researched about the various highly controversial cases involving the death penalty in Singapore.
Mr Shadrake has since been released after being detained for over 39 hours since the day of his arrest on 18 Jul 10. He is still being summoned back on a daily basis for investigation related to the charges of criminal defamation and contempt of court brought on by the Singapore Government.

In civil society, there is a thing called “physical social space” of the individual – THAT MUST BE RESPECTED. People should NOT have to be reminded by their parents, education and society how to “talk” in any disagreement in a civil society.

SDP, you can be more creative, like:
1) Call the Police to come and check out this suspicious guy who loiters near the lift.
2) Take pictures of the guy and upload to your websites to shame him
3) Call a few strong guys to “chit-chat” with the guy
4) Harass the guy. Better still if he says he’s from the Police. Tape the conversation secretly to see what other nonsense he can say and then put it on YouTube.
SDP, you guys write this type of complaint letter to whom? No addressee. Better save the time and trouble. Even if you wrote to the government, you think they will reply you har?
Ms Zeng should take pictures of the people harassing her, file a police report, and get a PPO.

Is the article’s objective to seek attention from the public? I suppose you have to try something like this when no one in the country really bothers about a drug trafficker being charged for death sentence. As someone commented earlier, call the police or do something.
Honestly, I cannot think of a reason why would someone want to harass you guys? I can think of no motive.
What can one make up of the need of Shadrake to ‘make daily visits’ as instructed by the investigating authorities?
Why can’t questioning be done and completed in a couple of days? Is it very complexed and complicated that is made up to be?
Can it be that this is a strategy designed to incovnenient the ‘victim’, to weaken him, to stressed him out, to intentionally waste his time, to ultimately degrade him?
Well I have read past records of they ‘investigate’ opponents of the system, and this investigation of Shadrake is no different.
And pardon my 2 cents worth, if I am correct, i can detect a simlilarity, there might be certain powers setting up a similar strategy designed to ‘tekkan’ Rachel. AND if this is so, to Rachel stand firm – the authorites know full well how to tear down a Berlin Wall in Singapore, but they wont have powers that cannot be thwarted. They cant get Chia Thye Poh go heaven, Lim Hock Siew the same.
But be very very guardful – not to scare you but just be aware of the bastards.
MOST IMPORTANT – dont do anything silly and heroic. There is NO place for heroes here, except some self-proclaimed 1st world heroes in a 3rd world place. There can never be a Gandhi or Mandela clone here – the bastards WILL not allow it – its pure wishful thinking if anyone thinks so. This place is world class this world class that – but in real-life, second only to Sudan or Zimbabwe or N Korea or Burma.
