PAP MPs to put up “wayang” in Parliament to seek “answers” for recent floods

Following the embarrassing series of floods last month which shook public confidence in the PAP, PAP MPs will be putting up another “wayang kulit” in Parliament soon to “show” that they are reflecting concerns from Singaporeans to the minister in charge.

In earlier flood last year November, PAP Minister of Environment Yaacob Ibrahim claimed that such floods are rare events which “occur once in fifty years” only.

However Singapore has been hit by flash floods in the entire month of June including prime shopping district Orchard central which was once billed as “un-floodable” by the state media.

Despite the public outcry, Mr Yaacob was nowhere to be seen, heard or found during the flooding and push the blame instead to his subordinate PUB CEO Khoo Teng Chye who did not even have the decency to offer a public apology to soothe frayed nerves.

The “question” posed by the PAP MPs to Mr Yaacob is unlikely to make a real difference except to showcase their “relevance” to taxpayers.

The PAP occupies 82 out of 84 seats in Parliament. Unlike parliaments elsewhere, PAP ministers are not required to answer impromptu questions on the spot out of fears of being “caught off-guard”.

Questions are drafted up in written format and sent to them to be vetted before answers are prepared in a scripted form to be read out in Parliament whose proceedings are no longer shown live.

No matter how the PAP MPs pretend to “grill” Mr Yaacob, his position remains as secure as ever. In fact, he may even be getting a hefty pay rise at the end of the year in spite of his dismal performance as the Environment minister so far, only under Singapore’s unique system of “meritocracy”.

The whole lot should resign and go Hollywood and become actos.

When LTK gets a rebuke from any MIW, the below scenerio will happen:

(Placard reads “LAUGH AND CLAP YOUR HANDS”)

  • Cannon:

    This…..

    Yakult’s circular:

“Mt fellow esteemed colleagues, I am about to give an appropriate response re: recent frequent S’pore floods to our daft citizens. As usual, I have already prepared my speech and I have attached 24 questions (standard procedure),which I want you to ask me during the “debate.” Choose any 6 out of the 24 as that is all I am prepared to answer to.

PS: I expect LTK to ask awkward questions as usual. Help me out there and thumb him down and humiliate him so he will be ashamed. I don’t think Sylvia will say anything as usual and our PP Rep already getting senile.

    Thank you
    Yakult”

  • Deaf frog:

It is rumoured that 80% of the MPs expressed their concern to the Prime Minister but the Prime Minister just ignore concerns of the MPs because he is deaf to criticisms, like the frog sitting on top of the tower.

  • Get PAP out of the system:

    Scripted questions.

Will get scripted answers….in our parliament.

In these days of cyber era,do we really need MP–just to ask 1 or 2 questions in 2 or 3 months and get paid 16k a month with pension to boot?

Questions are asked aplenty in this forum ,blogs and etc.

All we need is palatable answers by our ministers paid millions to do so.

Let the netizens than debate the minister’s reply and form their own conclusion.

  • susan ong:

Yeah only rumour and rumour also say this PM is resigning from his office as the flood of Orchard too embarrassing liao (Of not truth as he already thick skin to say don’t expect this island will not be flooded although millions had been spend to improve it since how many years back)…. :D :D :D :D

  • Ben:

In many countries, those in charge will definitely answer for such incidents. i suppose this is baseic responsibility?

  • Kerith Ravine:

    Boys and girls,

    The time has come!

Nature will punish our country for having such wicked government.

Global warming has melted much of the ice caps and glaciers. There is so much water that sea level has been on the rise.

Our PAP ruling party has no courage to admit this but rather turn our attention to the choking of drainage systems.

If they admit it they are telling investors who bought properties in Marina Bay and Sentosa Cove they have made a serious mistake in buynig these properties, detering investors to purchase more properties here and triggering massive sell-offs!

The Prince of Darkness has waited patiently and its time for him to eat the souls of the wicked and destroy the wealth of the rich and heartless people.

    KR

  • Kerith Ravine:

Everything that this wicked government is planning or invested will be completely destroyed. Just wait and see. Just wait and see.

    KR

  • Analyst:

The standard reply will be that drainage projects are under the Flood Alleviation Scheme and not Flood Elimination Scheme.
Since Orchard Road is in the tourist belt, we will ensure that the problem does not recur. Other areas can afford to be flooded.

  • romario:

    Well no need to worry

I think once MY Favourite minister go to heaven, the goverment will change plan

  • “Questions are drafted up in written format and sent to them to be vetted before answers are prepared in a scripted form to be read out in Parliament”

If million dollars paid MINISTERS can do that, then why can’t schools also draft up exams questions for students before answers are prepared in a scripted form to be handed up on exam days, huh? Same mah, right or not?

  • SureOrNot?:

I have a theory. Surface area in SG remained the same around the prime and central areas. Rain water falls into these areas and most get absorbed into the ground. The ground act as a filter and retards the flow of the water into our canals. Since there are vast masses of soil being dug up for KPE, Circle Line, Underground via-ducts, etc. Can the ground still hold the same amount of water as before? The scholars probably calculated average rainfall patterns but never take into consideration for the ground water holding capacity. These concrete structures will also act as an underground dam. It prevents water in some places from getting to other not so saturated areas. So we have floods more often. Valid theory?

Pay more if more hghrise littering
Firstly for doing a lousy job at present they got the cheek to threaten to increase S&C so that they can do a betterer job by asking workers to clean more regularly. Now it seems we pay a lot for unsatisfactory jobs – they want profits and outsourced to the cheapest. when we complain that for the money we are forced to pay we are not getting value worth. then they say –then pay more if you want better standards. same with buses, floods, etc

  • Weil:

Its high time the parliament should stand up and answer questions from the public and the proceedings of the parliament meetings be broadcasted live to all Singaporeans.

If some smart alec has the approval to run expensive fireworks every Saturday, months from the actual National day, the government should be able to move forward with the concept of a live telecast or webcast…just like how listed companies hosted their quarterly reporting.

No more room for excuses for these millionaire politicians.

For God’s sake when are they going to grow up as adults, still so childish, fooling around on stage. Play play also have to stop at a certain level.

their basic responsibility is to get their pay-check every month , expect huge increment every few years and smile when they look at their CPF statement !

despite the huge pay and years of working experience , yakult said he still learning ? how can yakult survive in private sector ? now i know who is wayang party !

  • SilenceIsGolden:

The topic of discussion in parliament is on how to admonish Singaporean for failing to inform the authority of the choked culvert. They will dish out a slew of punishment to ensure that the incident will not be repeated. Those who fail to inform the authority of any likely causes that may lead to flooding in Orchard Road will be guilty of an offense. They will be served with a CWO. to clean up any ditches or canal.

Further to that they will discuss on ways to increase fees to public services in order to pay for damages suffered during the recent floods.

  • ANTI- FOREIGNERS:

I saw the channel news asia programe on interview of gerad ee and two other guys on why the fares were higher.

They can basically “lie” and “justify” that fare prices indeed has gone down, by 1 cent if travel is done by multiple trips. Shame on these people, going on national t.v. and lie, lie and lie, big time, don’t they have “morals”, “integrity” and “SHAME” written all over the forehead. They can’t even answer a simple question, “why would someone wants to waste time and lost productive time, sitting in a bus and getting down at some point just to save some miserable cents”

Will that miserable cents bring us anywhere near to our minister’s wages, in ten years or twenty ??? or pay for a hdb flat.

Is this the kind of people the country wants to have to lead ??

Nepostism, cronyism, and nose browning is what we teach our children, no wonder we are short of ministers with “moral”, “integrity”, “principle”, and “compassion”

  • Francis:

Earlier this year GRC people originally said that this year was rumoured to be a election year, but with so many irresponsible acts till date, PAP is looking for a disaster, no amount of election engineering is going to help them if they continue in the path of self destruction. The next election might finially be the begin of the end for PAP.

  • 84 seats in Parliament now. We’ll wait and see how 84 (in cantanose) can last, haha!

  • David:

It’s time for another exciting episode of Pro-Aliens Party Vs The Goliath Flood.

This is definitely more “exciting” than the match between Spain and Holland!

    Bunch of losers…

    A re-qoute for them too -

What Wayang? Been doing it for decades you don’t know ah? As was recently, Halimah Yaacob’s and followed by a few other MP’s for the “Definition of Productivity” answered in parliament by NTUC Gen-Sec LSS? Answered by Trade and Industry Minister Lim Herng Kiang? Answered by Defense Minister Teo Chee Hean In-Charge of the Civil Service?

AH! GOT him now! – Answered by by that new Minister for Manpower Mr. who hah! Sorry he is so daft in my mind I always forget his name leh! Can someone kindly fill me in? And how was it “alak away hah? I didn’t care to remember those “bogus high-end chatters anymore”! As make more sense to listen to my own echo in the bathroom when bathing leh!

Or perhaps to be answered by a Minister for Productivity to be created as “Aka Datang”? They don’t know how to benchmark productivity by industry right? As none of them ever worked in one of them and shy shy proud to ask and look ignorant right?

“Here we go round the mulberry bush, round the mulberry bush for millions of dollars and so early in der-er morning”!

    2邓庆: July 12, 2010 at 12:18 am,

Presumably you commented on the context of China against Singapore. The greatest differences are SIZE of Land, Populations & MINISTERS WAGES.

In Singapore context, I do not see any ACCOUNTABILITY from our current government anymore. Humans do err, acknowledge, repent & avoid the same mistake again. That’s forgivable. However, it never convinced me that those ‘floods’ are mainly due to the act-of-God as most may call it.

IT’S THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM FAILURE AT THAT TIME that PUB & other relevant authority had to take responsibility of. That’s why I can see many ill-sentiments against the gov in dealing with the flooding incidents.

IS IT SO HARD TO APOLOGIZE ??????? Being the highest paid ministers in the world, that brings all their actions under its own citizen’s close scrutiny. That I pronounced, ACCOUNTABILITY.

How to gain mutual TRUST with PEOPLE when still being EGOISTIC ?? Just by walking around the constituency & appear in public events shaking hands, taking photos etc ?????

This gov in my opinion does not engage with the people on the ground at all. Parliament sessions may just another ‘public shows’ where all the dialogues are scripted in advance. Many decisions had already being approved by the HIGHER Authority even before the discussions.

    Just my observations & opinions.

  • wahlau:

I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IF PUBLIC UTILITIES BOARD (PUB) COULD PUBLISH ALL THE ‘DRAIN CHOKED’ PHOTOS TO THE PRESS THAT JUSTIFIES THEIR CONCLUSION FOR THE ORCHARD FLOODS.

That’s the only evidence I wanna see to convinced myself by them.

    Cheers.
