2 Singapore men committed suicide on 3 March 2010 due to financial distress

Written by Our Correspondent

According to Shin Min Daily yesterday, two Singapore men committed suicide on the same day by jumping off their flats.

The first suicide victim is a taxi-driver by the name of Mr Lim who jumped from his 15 storey kitchen windows at Taman Jurong.

He had lived with his wife and children in the HDB unit where the suicide occurred.

Neighbors described him as slightly plump and friendly to his neighbors.

It was reported that he was under alot of stress due to financial difficulties.

The second victim is a 30 year old Mr Quan who leapt off from 14 storey at a HDB flat at Holland Drive to his death.

He was wearing a white shirt and blue short pants when this tragedy took place.

It is suspected that financial reasons may be a cause too.

Despite being Asia’s second richest country after Japan, Singapore has few social welfare benefits for its citizens though it is able to lose billions of dollars of its reserves in failed overseas investments.

The competition has worsened lately with the relentless influx of foreigners into Singapore who depressed the wages of ordinary Singaporeans, increased the cost of living, especially that of public housing and led to an overall decline in the standards of living.

Foreigners are allowed to compete directly with Singaporeans for jobs and there are no minimum wage or retrenchment benefits for local workers.

Singapore’s octogenarian leader Lee Kuan Yew said during an interview with the National Geographic magazine that it is a “good thing” tha the nation has welcomed so many Chinese immigrants as they are more “hard-driving” and “hard-striving” than locals.

For those Singaporeans who have fallen too far behind in the rat-race as they are not hard-driving enough, suicide may remain the last resort for them.

I have seen a number of sucide last year and strangely none was reported in the paper.

  • According to Shin Min Daily yesterday, two Singapore men committed suicide on the same day by jumping off their flats.

LET ME TELL YOU THE TRUTH …BEHIND EVERY HBD FLAT DOOR..EVERY FAMILY IS IN FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY…..WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT DOING ABOUT IT….BUT INCREASING THEIR OWN SALARIES,IS THIS WHAT YOUR FOREFATHERS HAVE THOUGHT YOU.

  • edwin:

it is really sad to see fellow singaporeans to jump down.. this people might have a roof over their heads, a family to care for, elderly parents to look after among many other financial commitments! service housing loan..which is basically very standard thing for singaporeans..

high utilities fees, GST(incl. nessecities..food,sugar,cooking oil, salt, water…) wat else?

though these people may not fall under the income group which the garmen is giving out help.. we must take into consideration of their financial commitments, are they employed? are they competing with FTs for a decent job? plus high employment rates..all these small issues adds up into a big molehill!

garmen want us to give birth to more kids..with ever increasing house prices, utilities, how to?

say a family of 3, husband n wife working, with a toddler at home.. say both grandparents too old to look after? how?

either employ a FT maid..(not forgetting increase in levy), even if the couple send their kid to day care? is the price for day care going to be cheap? ans is NO!

this garmen is only good at squeezing every single blood n $ out of us citizens!

    time to sound Obama’s slogan!

TIME FOR CHANGE! YES WE CAN!!!!

  • conned by Govt:

The papaya govt is only interested to get more people to work for them so they can make a lot of $$$$ and to enrich themselves (ministers) as the foremost priority.
The policy is to have as many foreigners as possible, make all the singaporeans work side by side by competition with the foreigners and treat all as slaves. The PAp leaders are ruthless, they have offer no meaningful care for its citizens, only alot of rubbish talk… for example, when you cannot afford to pay utilities bill promptly , the govt will help you put up a electric meter so you can better control your usage by inserting coin into the meter before you can get any electricity supply… this is nonsense, what help??????

  • VerySian:

So on the first case that stays in Taman Jurong where that indian botak Darman meet-the-people is… And the person died exactly right on the blk which is every mon meet-the-people session conducts.

So did that idiot botak, at one rush go to the deceased family members house and offer console and comfort words???

Ans: I doubt so. Reasons: Maybe he is afraid if he goes, he might be haunt by that taxi driver’s ghost spirit. And also the family members might throw rotten eggs at Indian Botak FM Darman’s face.

  • Lesser Mortal Kombay:

No loss for the PAP perhaps, since they’ve got so many new citizens and citizens-to-be.

I remember PM Lee saying “No Singaporean will be left behind.” What the hell happened here…

  • Ah Siao:

    you die, you businss

  • zero is stupid:

SHAME SHAME SHAME SINGAPORE! How many of such cases more do we need before the Government do something about providing safety nets for the poor?

  • Ah Siao:

    you die, your business

  • lim beh gar li kong:

wa lan eh…. commit sucide also blame the governemnt.

  • Damon Yeo:

    Casino related as well, possibly?

  • I was there to witness the corpse of one of them… Happened at the MPS flat somemore… ironically speaking. Another was heard to have taken place during the Chinese New Year in the same vicinity.

    Sigh…

See? How to save them if anyohow gan cheong, CitizenReddot.

Real death. Real corpses. Real family tragedies!

Luckily for me, I have seen too many corpses… so doesn’t matter seeing another. Quite sad.

  • Zero,

    It’s not exactly safety nets…

Simply speaking, just look… That corpse was driving taxi, he got a job, his wife probably screamed at him for not enuff not enuff not enuff…

    Why?

He worked hard, but prices fly harder! And MM Lee is talking about being more productive… Hahahahahahahahaha… Look, I am not mocking MM, but Mr Lee should go down to earth again and think seriously. All I can say is, if I were to be handling Singapore, I’d go the other way…

So young. The family now need government aid, and more aid! Then we have lost one ‘worker’. And bad karma…

This corpse needed a leader who can handle their lives… before they migrated to hell. And that’s loss. After all, we will need more babies to cover for them. But babies with jumping (off the flats) parents…

    How to do???

  • RCA:

Do the you guys know that, if you committed suicide, your dead body willl be handcuffed? I don’t understand the point in this. Who was the one who implemented this?

  • Kan Ni Nah:

What a clever way of forcing singaporean to work hard & don’t be lazy. By introducing FT to compete with singaporean. See who die first if u don’t work hard. Borrow knife to kill people. What a good plan, we will show you our plan too , come this election.

  • 3rd generation Singaporean:

There’s hardly any suicide cases being reported in The Straits Times. Not surprising since the government wants to project a happy & contented image of Singaporeans. With the election coming, there will be a lot of image building in the coming days. There’s will be some sweeteners along the way too. It’s the same old political tactic.

  • Don't know what to say:

    There will be more.

Maybe reporting what our dearest “arMPit” are lying in parliament is more worthy. No?

  • Harry TomDick:

It’s all about “Meesiam Mai Hum”.

  • AIYOYO:

I thought Pappies said, nobody will be left behind!

  • HOW COME?:

More compassion is needed by the government in the matter of lifting the standard of living. In this day and age, no citizen should have to commit suicide due to unable to finance their needs. The tough stand of PAP on welfare needs some extra moderation – it is no tenable in modern world-views.

  • Yvonne:

I saw a suicide too earlier this year. But the newspapers try to hide it.

My sister’s friend also committed suicide. The boy was only 25 years old….sighs….

If it is not enough the PAP bring in foreigners to replace citizens (committing gradual genocide), they still want us to die EVEN FASTER!!

  • sicktothebones:

to lim beh gar li kong
govt mis-policies have caused a lot of hardship to the older Sporeans and indirectly led them to this desperate situations. So don’t try to brush this off.
if there were that many social safety nets which are so restrictive and difficult to qualify – people won’t have to resort to suicides.
if you have any shred of conscience you would not try to side the govt and tell us they are blameless in this tragedy.

  • Yenling:

    RCA,

REALLY?!?!?! People who die from suicide will still be HANDCUFFED?!?!?!

There is really no hope for this country anymore. These pigs insult us in life and even want to insult us in death.

Who are the 66% idiots who voted for these pigs?

  • AIR FORCE KING:

I am one of the 66% Idoits that voted for this pigs in the last election, Yenling. I see the error of my ways as a first time voter. Next election i am voting for the oppositon. I am not going the one of the contributers for Singaporeans to suffer the next time.

This government is a insult to the nation i serve. I am so saddened to see my fellow Singaporean bros commit sucide. Our sucide rates are high for a country like singapore.

Singapore is the 2nd richest country in asia after Japan???? i think they forgot to include the gulf states or even Brunei. You want welfare, look at so many nations esp Brunei. That is what i call welfare.

You know why the government want us to have more kids?? It is beacause more males= more ppl for NS. You think the forgieners will do NS??? The normal NS pay is even lower than what a construction worker earns. Moreover it is a total Insult to the Miltary and to the nation if Forigen talent is hired to work in the Miltary.

Soon us Singaporeans will be a minority in our own country, if we let this morons ruin us. They are trying to enslave us.

We are free men. Taking from a line from the movie 300 “The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many .” It is time to do so my fellow bros

  • AIR FORCE KING:

The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many- from the movie 300.

TIME TO MAKE THAT STAND RIGHT NOW!!!!!

  • Bolo:

    Sad . . .
It’s the culture, wanting to live up to the next door Jones, unrealistic expectations, etc., reinforced by Channel 8 serials that often suicides as the alternative way out.
Our relatively poorer Muslim Malay brethren saddled with large familes don’t kill themselves.
They are not embarrassed to seek help from the town councils, from MPs at meet-the people sessions, self help groups (some even registered with churches for assistance), mosques, school’s assistance in fee waiver, free textbooks, uniforms, pocket money . . .
    And they move on

  • Weil Ng:

    all problems can be solved.

death is an escape, not an end to the problem. The deceased’s family will have to endure a rough duration of their own family member who died.

But sadly, the numbers may go up north when the speculation of living costs and people who took the bite will face the consequence.

  • dunbeanidiot:

@ lim beh gar li kong on Fri, 5th Mar 2010 1:04 am

wah gar li kong, not suicide also blame govt hor. is because they committed suicide due to FINANCIAL DISTRESS.

we blame govt for FINANCIAL DISTRESS IMPOSED ONTO SINGAPOREANS,
obviously you catch no ball at all.

ST will only report suicide if it is: “Foreign Talents committed suicide on DD MM YYYY due to XXXXXXXXXXXX.”

As for Singaporeans, our govt already stated, you die your business, so ST obviously sees no need to report.

  • So that's what happens in a democratic ctry:

Let’s not jump (pardon the pun) to conclusions, financial difficulty can occur for many reasons…

Although the govt is obviously not performing up to standards, it’s quite a stretch to link 2 suicide cases to their policies.

We must avoid becoming the same standard as the PAP, aka talk without thinking, as shown by many of the MPs during this Budget ‘debate’…

    sad…really sad….

  • Fang:

This suicide is because of financial pressure which exists because of the pressure of society which is caused by the govt because it wants to poke its nose and influence every facet of our lives.

Don’t tell me its not related to the govt. If the cost of living wasn’t so high you think he’d jump off a building?

Why does Singapore have the highest rate of suicides in the world then??

Obvious la. In case you decide do u-turn and raise from the dead.

  • K:

In addition to failing to stop the world’s lowest birthrate after numerous world-class million dollar ministers and given decades for their policies to “take effect” they have not admitted their incompetence and abject FAILURE, now more singaporeans are committing suicide and it is seen as just “normal” everyday cases.

It is only a matter of time before Singapore no longer belongs to Singaporeans.

It belongs to the PAP elite and their foreigners.

  • ILOVESINAGPORE:

66% can be breakdown at civil servants, RC members and relatives. So how many real sillyporean really vote for opposition?

I heard fm my people that during the last GE. He (civil servants) was told by his boss that not to vote for oppositon if not he will not get promotion and pay rise.

He is stupid, We know that this is a crime or offends however for his future guess he did.

  • bunchofwankers:

Handcuffed so just in case you didn’t die from the fall, you will be charged and cannot escape. Just like what LKY said if something is wrong he will still wake up from his coffin… ya right… I think he will not RIP when he goes.

  • Sawdust:

If twice in the past I had problems, I went to my MP for help, I didn’t get to see him, so how? In the end I had to fork up borrowed money to settle the problems. It’s all because of a PR devil for a boss! Who had refused to pay my notice in lieu when I was thrown out of the office, 1 week after I had tendered. Also, refused to pay me for the office purchases, as well as private jobs I have done for the company! Went to MOM but they were unable to help, because I fell in the “grey area”. So put in a civil case, but because this devil is “deep pocketed” and can afford to drag the case, I lost because I cannot afford to go for trial. In the end I have to end the case and paid my own lawyers fee with the borrowed money.

If one commit suicide and died, under the CPF HPS scheme, the HDB flat will be fully paid by CPF. Moreover, under DPS, the dependent will be paid a sum of money like $18,000″

It depends on whose name is in the HPS scheme. Example:- If ONLY the husband’s name is on the HPS scheme & the wife committed suicide, there will be no payment for obvious reason. In this case, if only the wife was working, then the jobless husband will have a BIG problem. This is a possible scenario when the husband is in his forties or fifties these days & nobody wants to give him a job for whatever reason.

As for the DPS, there will be payment PROVIDED they’re still paying their premium. If they defaulted on their premium, the policy will lapse.

In conclusion, IT IS very possible that this family will receive ZERO payment. Of course, this is the worst case scenario but it can happen, given the current situation for our fellow Singaporeans.

  • So that's what happens in a democratic ctry:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

It’s not true S’pore has the highest suicide rate lah… like I say, don’t end up like PAP, just shoot and shoot without thinking, like how they chiong and chiong more FT into the country without thinking.

To make a difference, we must first be different.

  • Native Singaporeans:

We have to do something for our native singaporean or else more people will consider suicide as an option.

Surprising when those bunch of new citizens unable to integrate into singapore, our government without hesitation take out S$10millions to help them integrate.

Now it is matter of life & death, why is our government not doing anything to help ?!!!!!!!

Are we going to let this suicide incident due to financial difficulty to take place every now and then ?

:( The present government is not keen to look after their citizens, they are more concern for their million salary & new citizens welfare.

Therefore Voting Out PAP is necessary !

Vote PAP OUT ! Vote PAP OUT !!!!! Vote PAP OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!

Suicide is crime in Singapore law so they cuff you like a criminal. If the suicide failed, they will also cuff you to the way to hospital (if required) or the police station. When recovered, sentence will be passed for attempting suicide.

So, now you see who’s running Singapore? It’s Count Dracula and his nest of vampires and they own all the blood banks of the people. They need to feed!

Botak man claimed a low income family of 4 can receive transfer from gahment totaling about $460,000 over a lifetime. Can the poor faimly ask for 50 pct advance, that is $230,000 to cover living expenses. Talk is cheap. How did he arrived at this amount amazed me.

  • xyman:

Ok, all those who have lot of comments on TR, please contribute an amount to help those Singaporeans in need, since so many complaints on Government not doing their things. TR, please set up a fund to help those in need. Also, don’t say that the government is setting up redtapes to prevent people from helping people. Your website is soliciting for donation, isn’t it?

If such a fund is set up by TR, I will contribute $1,000, not too much to some of you but I want to let user know that, comments is cheap, action is priceless. Less talk, more actions. Also, don’t say is the job of government to do all these things because they have been sucking Singaporeans money dry. You as a responsible Singaporeans should make the first move and change before you change other.

  • Ah Siao:

Truly Sad for one still in the prime of their LIFE.Jumping from one’s flat tells the sad tale of family, personal and frustration with life when even with a roof life is still miserable.

Undoubtedly both own the houses they jump from.Value of both units can easily offset their debts if that is the case or like our self sacrificing Singaporean genes INHERITED from our forefathers, suicide to pay off all debts including HDB balances and give their family a new start in life.

Whatever the reasons my condolences to the families.

As for the GOVT.”FUCK ALL OF YOU FOR THE MONSTER THAT SINGAPORE IS TODAY”

  • Viva Democracy:

Did you guys realise LHL is SILENT in the debate. His guys are out to take risks for him.

  • band of brothers:

Viva Democracy on Fri, 5th Mar 2010 12:49 pm

Good observations, this LHL will not be found during any heated debate while ironically he is supposed to be the prime minister, the chief in the cabinent.

This disappearing act is a trend and his cabinets ministers are out there covering his ass. He will only appear when credits are to be claimed, his style as always.

This is the kind of prime minister the 66% had voted in. In any organisations, the head will take the rap of any mistakes or screwups, not here in Singapore, definitely not the PAP.

  • Raven:

  • Sawdust:

LHL is thinking of how to “fix” the oppositions if they are voted in in this coming election!

  • 3rd generation Singaporean:

Everytime a Prime Minister stepped down, a new post is created out of thin air. Currently, we have Minister Mentor(LKY), followed by Senior Minister(GCT). What’s next when LHL stepped down? Looks like it’s 0% unemployment rate up there.

Maybe we should have the same policy for our poor fellow Singaporeans. In other words, nobody will lose their jobs. Instead, they will be known as ‘Senior Employees’ or ‘Employee Mentors’ with salaries to match. Singapore will then be the 1st country in the world with 0% unemployment rate. LOL!!!

  • The Truth:

Fast forward a few years from today, I am inclined to think that we could be reading about reports of suicides from gambling debts accumulated at the local casinos.

  • I agreed ! Maybe this is also the reason why HDB is building so many rental flats around S’pore. Are they preparing that many people will be make bankrupt ???

This may need several applicable governmental agencies to co-ordinate and help. Perhaps a didicated agency can be created so as to co-ordinate and give this help promptly and effectively.
