Besides foreign workers, it appears that freelance prostitutes are flocking to the newly opened Resorts World Sentosa casino as well.
Last week, Lianhe Wanbao carried a report on the casino being swarmed by foreign workers during the festive season such that punters were having difficulties placing their bets as they were surrounded by them.
While they may be put off by the strange odors emanating from the foreign workers, the male gamblers are unlikely to resist the scents from the perfumes the freelance prostitutes soliciting business there.
According to a Lianhe Wanbao report yesterday, young sexy ladies pretending to be gamblers were spotted at the Resorts World Sentosa casino fishing for clients in a discreet manner.
One of its reader Mr Ang claimed that a lady tried to “seduce” him.
“She whispered gently into my ear if I wanted any massage services,” Mr Ang described his experience.
He asked the lady how much she charged and she told him $200. Mr Ang declined the offer respectfully as his wife was around.
Though prostitution is legal in Singapore, there is a bustling underground trade involving freelance prostitutes, many of whom used to ply their trade along the narrow alleys of Geylang.
In fact, it’s the only place in the world where one can find women from nearly all the provinces of China there.
With the opening of the casinos, the freelance prostitutes will surely be lured there to catch “bigger fishes” and it will be more difficult for the authorities to apprehend them as they will be mingling with the crowd pretending to be punters.

The authorities seem to be “blind” of these activities!

When there is demand there will be supply.
At least the women are enterprising enough to change strategy and ply their trade at the casinos.
Unlike our companies who have no brains to improve their business but to make us work longer hours with very low pay.
So don’t begrudge these women.
We can argue about the social disadvantages of the casinos till the cows come home, but it has already happened.
Where is our sense of decency? Degrading other people, (eg. “strange odors emanating from the foreign workers”) making it sound like we are better than them, only shows how racists and bigoted we are. How convenient of us to forget, the way we have treated them so badly; abusing them, putting them up in cramp conditions, calling them trash and garbage; I remember once a FW was discarded into the drain instead of sent to a hospital by his employer when he got into an accident.
They are all people like us, who only want to a better life. And they are doing it they only way they know how. Do you think, they would do it if they have the chance not to?

although i agree with alot of what TR has to say, I find that the tone of reporting and the comments are getting increasingly xenophobic.
I think the open door policy on foreigners by the government is too much, and has caused alot of hardship as well as discomfort amongst Singaporeans. But don’t forget it is our own government that allows it. These people, whether from China or Bangladesh are just here to make a living. They come from countries where the situation is alot tougher and hope for a better future. Don’t we also want a better future if possible?
Just as an example, If the US or EU suddenly allow all Singaporeans to work there as long as companies there are willing to employ us on whatever terms, would we (singaporeans) accept such an opportunity?
I know I would.

Just want to put down a marker here to agree with Incredulous and Boboshooter. Though the underlying message of many articles here have merit; their delivery is increasingly bigoted and biased.

1) There’s no need to mention it; the writer could have used another phrase to make the same point.
2) The fact that only non foreign workers might find this odour mentioned “strange” suggests to us that the writer is putting himself in a class above these workers and passing a purely racist and subjective judgment on them.

Firstly, whoever edits TR has let the site down by allowing such an amateur column to be posted. It’s shocking that this columnist was probably paid by TR for contributing.
Secondly, if the foreign workers were reading this and able to reply, they’d probably say that most Singaporean Chinese (esp. the ‘heartlanders’) smell like lard – not very pleasant either.

The casino is one of the vilest, most evil thing ever to set foot on Singapore’s shores. I find it puzzling that the government has to set up National Council on Problem Gambling to tackle the social problems that the casino will bring. There’s no need to set up the council in the first place if there isn’t any casinos!
Now that there are news of foreigners who commit crimes after they lost their money, parents leaving their 6 – 12 years old kids outside the casinos for hours while they squander their monthly income and the influx of prostitutes, the casino has indeed proven itself to be the source of morale decay of our fragile society.
I sincerely hope the casinos will collapse. After all, Sentosa used to be called “Pulau Mati” in the past. Maybe it will live up to its name when the casinos go bankrupt.
I’ve not yet been to the casino at CWS and probably would never as long as the place is flooded with foreign worker from India. I rather fly to Macau,anyway air fare is inexpensive if fly by Tiger or Jetstar.
