Video clip urging Singaporeans to vote out PAP making waves in Singapore’s blogosphere

Written by Our Correspondent

A video clip exhorting Singaporeans to vote for change in the next general election by famous online film-maker Wendy Neo has garnered more than 8,000 views within a few days of publication.

Wendy Neo is famous for the production of videos critical of the PAP. She wrote on her Youtube profile that she is currently an undergraduate in Perth and will become an Australian citizen after she turned 21 years of age.

The title of her latest video is: “Singapore General Election 2010 新加坡大选: BERUBAH 改变 மாற்றம் CHANGE”:

The video began with a summary of proposed changes in policy such as a minimum wage system, first world salary for Singaporeans, increased healthcare subsidy and retirement for the elderly followed by snapshots of the main opposition leaders in Singapore.

The middle portion of the video clip showed an elderly lady picking cardboards for a living with a background voice saying in mandarin:

“For the past forty years, I have been voting for the Foreigner Action Party (PAP) and this is what I get in return. How did things turn out this way? What happened? Now they say I am old and useless and want to dump me at JB for me to die overseas. My fellow Singaporeans, please save me which is also saving yourselves. Please remember: what happened to me now will happen to you one day.”

The clip then showed photos of PAP MPs enjoying themselves and urged Singaporeans not to give up their opportunity for change.

Though the video clip lasted only less than 3 minutes, the message is clear and concise: vote for change and vote out the PAP!

The opposition should make use of such video clips as part of their electoral campaign to get their message out to Singaporeans. To ensure that they are influenced to vote against the PAP, they must play on their emotions – their fears, anxieties, worries, anger, frustration, resentment and angst.

Contrary to what the PAP would like us to believe, politics is all about emotions. The opposition must capitalize on the groundswell of dissatisfaction, unhappiness and disgruntlement against the PAP and utilize it to its benefit.

Netizens can help by:

1. Sharing the video clip with your relatives from the older generation who do not surf the internet.

2. Forward the video link to all your friends and colleagues or by embedding the video on your blogs.

3. Download and burn the video clip to CDs and distribute them to the residents living in your block.

If each of us were to do our part right now, our combined efforts will soon snowball into a massive grassroots movement to advocate for change in the coming election.

it’s quite good, actually something like a trailer…

  • sad peasant:

Singapore is run by a heartless government who think they can do whatever they want just because the media is under their control and no formidable second party to pressure them.

I used to be a supporter for PAP but their immigration policy caused a lot of hardship for me as well as other Singaporeans. They open the flood gates to foreigners add salt to our wounds from the economy crisis.

Many of these foreigners came here to compete for scarce jobs that we need to support not only ourself but also our aging parents and handicapped sibling. These foreigners came here with their family back at home taken care off by other siblings and thus able to ask for very low wages which Singaporeans could not survive with.

I did’t care if the PAP is taking a million dollar wage package or in power for another 50 years, all I ask for is a job for me to feed me and my parents. Even that, PAP’s heartless policy has taken that away from me. It is my karma since I thought that there was nothing wrong with one party rule and a cabinet full of white horses who don’t know about the sufferings of the people on the ground level.

I truely am sad and disappointed.

  • Perth:

She is not even a Singaporean, I am not very convinced by her.

  • WTF:

Hi sad peasant, I feel for you and many alike.
we are at this stage because of one vision like this

” This is not administration doing a job. This is entrepreneurship on a political stage on a national scale! ”

    — GIC Chairman, Minister Mentor.

Spore is not a nation, it is a corporate, Singapore Inc.
only the fittest and the smartest survive, the rest are just
numbers, digits, tools for the pursuit of the corporate goal.

  • Zelphon:

    My Fellow Singaporeans…

Just look around you and think back the past 10 years of your lives…

Do you feel that you are better off??

Think ahead 10 years and project how your retirement will be like??

Can you afford to retire in Singapore when you are old???

Vote for what you believe in…

    Pls VOTE WISELY !!!!

  • chucky:

LKY talks about inevitable all the time. Look at the Scandinavian countries in Europe. They have similar populations as Singapore, but they have social security and healthcare benefits. Btw people in those countries do not load themselves with insurances cos they don’t have to everything is well taken care of. They too do not have resources but operate sovereign wealth funds like GIC and Temasek and share the wealth with its people. As for Singapore, PAP keep millions for themselves and keep telling us we work not hard enough and we’re getting peanuts. Fellow Singaporeans, if we continue to vote for them there’ll be many more poor folks like the old lady in the video. Do not laugh as it can happen to anybody. Do not be selfish. You can make a difference at the voting boxes!

  • Singaporean:

It’s time to vote PAP out!

  • dunbeanidiot:

I supported PAP in the past election too.

But now, I am totally disheartened.
During my employment, I have seen many Singaporeans citizens been replaced by these so-called FTs and PRs.
I must empathise this: do not lump PRs and citizens together! They are different. Very different.

Citizens are willing to work hard and long.
But they are cruelly replaced by employers who prefer these cheaper FTs and PRs so that they can reduce their labour costs.
Not because citizens are choosy and what-nots.

  • LocalChineseGuy:

Although Im only 27 and am a product of the SG system (local grad blah blah), Im not under any illusion that the government will take care of me. Echoing what others have said, SG is not a nation, its just a mega corporation run by a few ‘Elites’. Frankly, when the opportunity arises and the pay is good, the natural reaction for me is to jump ship…..just like in the corporate world. Call me a quitter, call me whatever you want, just look at your own backyards and ponder before u do so (everyone here knows what kind of quitter kids those ministers have.)

Well Done! Someone who is no longer a citizen of SG and still care so much about her native country. How many would have done so?

Dear Sad Peasant…you are not alone out there…I got cheated
by the goverment-owned bank DBS of my retirement through veil selling. Now got no more money..try to find a well decent wage job to cover the high cost of living. But still unable to find job, so lower my job expectation level for a lower pay..but got to compete against the very young and very cheap workers from other countires…so still can not even get a job with lower expectation as most employer prefer young and cheaper cost FT workers. The goverment open the floodgate for these very cheap workers to work in Singapore at the tremendous cost to Singaporean. I as a senior citizen faithfully voted PAP in every election but surely a big disappointment. There previous policy statement..

1.Promoting all well-to-do Singaporean and Companies to support
fellow less well-off Singaporean in many other ways. But in reality ..the the local companies prefer to employ cheap and young “FT” workers instead as the cost is 50% cheaper.
Therefore all senior Singaporean ..55 years got no job as the 45+ old Singaporean already fighting hard for job to feed their young families. The goverment now contradicting their statement by supporting such practices by allowing very cheap workers in the job market.

2.The goverment raise the retirement age from 55 to 63 with well intentions. But again contradicting their policy.. they open the floodgate of cheap workers to compete against the older workers. Now employer want to hire young and cheap “FT” workers. Seem the goverment with veil intention (just like the Banks to cheat )..to misled the Singaporean. Their real intention is to delay the CPF withdrawal age at 55 to 63 ( by transfering to special account so you got no money in ordinary account for withdrawal 55 age) So the 55 years old now got no JOB and NO money to pull through a decent life to 63 age.

So all fellow senior Singaporean faithful voters…think carefully..do not cast in a spoiled votes but vote for a good
opposition party to voice our same major concerns –our job and families survive!!!

A short video made by a person who is not a Singaporean !

For the pass years in early 90s, had anyone think about who are those who promote importing foreigners to Singapore ? The HR professionals and their bosses are also part of the drive for foreign imports. One will not be surprise to find some of these imports come to learn from us rather than to bring their skills to contribute. Which ever one vote for in the next election, the problem will not easily go away. There is always a fine balance between locals and import. What is most important is the policies that makes citizens, permanent residence, and non-citizens different !

    Wayne Lim,

I felt the same as you. A stranger in your own country. Funny, isn’t it?

  • Wayne Lim:

I am always a supporter of PAP, but this time i am very sad about 2 things.

    1) Huge influx of foreigners

    2) Huge price of HDB flats.

I remember LHL once said that “Chinese in China”, “Indians in India” is different from Chinese Singaporean & Indians Singaporean. There are now so many “Chinese in China”, “Indians in India” coming to Singapore i am beginning to lose my self belonging in Singapore.

With such high prices of HDB flats, even i have the money to pay for a HDB flat now, i will not have enough for my retirement. That means, you have to give up one of these.

  • Time For Change:

44 Years of PAP rule and a thousand promises. Just look at Singapore today and what do you see? 1.8 million foreigners, and a large percentage of Singaporeans struggling to make ends meet.

Anyone who believes in the PAP govt now must be mad, really mad. Their results are there for you to see. No need to listen to what they say anymore. Just look at Singapore today and you have the answer.

The video is an excellent production depicting a sad story of a Singapore lady trusting this govt for 44 years and having to pick cardboards for a living now. It can happen to all of us if we continue to trust this totally incompetent govt.

So vote wisely. Time for change. I must congratulate TR and Wendy for a job well done.

Sorry, I don’t have much respect for people who leave Singapore for better pastures, and yet tell us to fight for our rights, while they are safe in their adopted country.

It is easy to comment, when you are far away, without fear of repercussions.

At least we have young people like Alex Tan, Mr Tony Tan Lay Thiam and his wife, Ms Hazel Poa joining the opposition and staying here doing something about it; when they could have easily find better pastures elsewhere.

I wish Ms Wendy Neo, all the best in her new adopted country. But leave Singapore to Singaporeans to handle our own fate.

Lee was educated at Telok Kurau Primary School, Raffles Institution (where he was a member of the 01 Raffles Scout Group), and Raffles College. His university education was delayed by World War II and the 1942-1945 Japanese occupation of Singapore. During the occupation, he operated a successful black market business selling tapioca-based glue called Stikfas. Having taken Chinese and Japanese lessons since 1942, he was able to find work transcribing Allied wire reports for the Japanese, as well as being the English-language editor on the Japanese Hodobu (報道部 — an information or propaganda department) from 1943 to 1944

During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, Nathan worked for the Japanese civilian police as a translator.

  • I was back in Sinkapore just last week visiting some friends enroute to Kuala Lumpur and I felt like I was actually in China.

    Sinkapore is so China! :)

@Incredulous who siad: Sorry, I don’t have much respect for people who leave Singapore for better pastures, and yet tell us to fight for our rights, while they are safe in their adopted country.

Your reasoning is flawed. There are reason why people like us leave Sinkapore. One doesn’t abandon one’s own country , for better or for worst unless it was circumstances people like us cannot accept anymore. We found that the situation might have become so unacceptable for us, so we leave and staying would not have be for the good of our family, our sons, grandsons, etc.

Encouraging Sinkaporeans to fight for your own country is nothing wrong and it is entirely up to YOU to decide if you want to make changes for YOUR owen good or not, besides, even if Sinkapore sinks eventually, it will affect people like YOU, not us who have left.

To Sinkapore on Tue, 9th Feb 2010 1:02 pm

I, welcome your opinion. And you are right, people do leave Singapore for a myriad of reasons. And they have successfully established themselves in their adopted countries.

However, WE are here, while THEY are there. WE are the ones facing the brunt of the MIW’s policies. People who left Singapore for better pastures, have the right to do so….but they must remember their actions (in their belief it is for the good of Singaporeans) will have no repercussions to them while WE may bear the brunt of their actions.

Example was the bloody 1960s/1970s when foreign influences tried to impose their might on is.

From your comment; “it is entirely up to YOU to decide if you want to make changes for YOUR owen good or not, besides, even if Sinkapore sinks eventually, it will affect people like YOU, not us who have left”

We have the power to vote to affect change. The people who left have lost the opportunity to make history, and be a part of a new Singapore without the MIW.

So, lets leave it to Singaporeans to handle our own fate.

  • Well Done:

Come on fellas, be fair to Wendy. She has done an excellent job by producing a video depicting the fallacies of the Singapore govt. That’s her contribution which we should appreciate. To ask her to come back when she is only 20 years old studying for a career in Australai is unfair. She can always contribute while she is in Australia and send us her contributions via TR.

I say well done to her and to TR. Keep up the fight and PAP will become history in quick time.

  • Unhappy Citizen:

Yes, totally agreed. I will support PAP.

So by right it is legitimate for Chinese native who are Singaporean PRs to celebrate their national day in Singapore, as much as she will be celebrating Singapore’s national day in Australia as an Australian PR… Those who complain so much about the former, go and check the meaning of double standard.

Are you implying the ship will sink if PAP is voted out ?

Sporeans are merely voting to appoint a new captain and crew to helm the ship, not sink it lah.

Do you think LHL has been an effective captain of the ship ?
The truth is, majority would not trust him to helm a sampan.

  • Fugazzi:

Whether she is from here or elsewhere does not matter. This is what matters lar – that PAP is a spent party and especially in the years to come it is going to get worse.
As long as there is no other voice{s} that have different views, opinions and a system where checks n balances are part of the system – Singaporeans are a doomed lot.
One party-system is fallible to corruption and the tendency for the ruling party/govt is to manipulate via of repressing thru means like a muzzled press, media and … what do u get?
All these can be ended if Singaporeans realize that the current govt is a self-serving one and simply vote them out and usher in a new way of life via -multi-party or two-party. It may change things around. VOTE AND VOTE FOR CHANGES.

PS = the fact that we have 82 or .. so MPs and a endless number of Minister and MM, Sm … speaks volumes of their so-called bragged about efficency and frankly it is an utter waste of tax payers’money. TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY – ALMOST NIL LAR!

HDB is a libaility and not an asset, so the price going up only means larger liability.

I think the message here is very much spot on. We need to change. I am doubtful whether PAP can be toppled in this election but at least we need to make them lose some seats so that they will start serving the people. PAP is making citizen suffer due to the influx of foreigners. It is alright to be business-oriented so that we can attract foreign investment but NEVER at the expense of the citizen. What really rankles me is that the constant flip flopping to cover up their mistakes instead of rectifying the problem and alleviating the hardship of the people.

I will be casting my vote to the opposition as long as I get to vote in the next election. One way or another, we need a change for a better future

  • AL:

I was once an ardent PAP supporter as well, but their FT policies have opened my eyes. Time for a change, indeed.

Is it you or alligator speaking? Not very clever of facts though.

Name one country in the world that is not running like a corporation to bring in investment????

Let me give you BOT one but three – USA, Canada and Australia.

USA blocked the sales of Unocal to China National Offshore Oil Corporation

    http://cbs5.com/business/CNOOC.Unocal.Chevron.2.256196.html

Canada blocked block the sale of Macdonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. to Alliant Techsystems Inc. and several mining projects to Chinese state-owned business applying the Canada Investment Act.

    http://www.blakes.com/english/legal_updates/competition/may2008/Merger_Review_Canada.pdf

Australia Foreign Investment Review Board blocked (by stalling approval) the sale of just additional 9% stake only (bringing it up to 19% stake in Rio Tinto to China state-owned Chinalco

    http://www.smh.com.au/business/rio-shares-slump-on-chinalco-deal-uncertainty-20090318-91mu.html

    You are obviously uninformed.

Please open up your eyes before making some bald assertions here.

  • Lego:

    Jeremy,

If she remain in S’pore, don’t you think she would have been thrown into jail and/or made bankrupt???

  • Darth Vader:

To all Wendy Neo’s critics here, why do all of you condemn her for speaking out from Australia, but shut up when PRCs condemn Singaporeans here for speaking out against the MiWs’ self-serving policies just because they benefit from it? Before you condemn her, look at yourselves; what have you done to defend Singaporeans from insults & criticisms from the elite and the foreign parasites? She is not the enemy; it is those who betray the country and its people, and those who benefit from this who are.

For all of you who condemn her but clam up when locals come under attack by foreigners and the elite, either join true patriots who will defend locals against such attack, or stop being such self-righteous hypocritical cowards.

  • btan:

Wendy, if you are reading this, you are a true hero. Too bad our country will soon lost a daughter like you, though it don’t deserve to keep you. All the best and one day return in triumph.

  • Medaline:

Why did she use white people speaking really bad Malay in this video? LOL. They sound so bad.

  • YODI:

I was born under the Lee Kuan Yew dynasty then live under the Goh Chok Tong era for a short while cos he had to hand over to Lee’s son and now I am still back under the Lee dynasty!

Will I be under another Lee cronie or another son or grandson or maybe this time daughter or granddaughter?????

I think it’s time for a change. Enough of one family and party running the country. It’s time we singaporeans learn and realise that there are other people who are just as passionate about our country and we dont need to be paid such ridiculous salaries to run this country. The amount of money we pay them we can get many more capable people at half even quarter the price!!

So lets once and for all go for a real change and not be conned anymore or threatened by this government.

    Let’s all: MAKE THAT CHANGE!!

You are indeed very well informed in very specific area, but generally every country has to run like one though otherwise those countries u name will have stop promoting tourism and investment coming into the country. Don’t u agree?

OrEmuN on Tue, 9th Feb 2010 9:17 pm

I do agree we need opposition in there to stir things up a bit so that they will always stay alert. Though I don’t totally agreed with everything that they’re doing, again, considering all government body in the world today, ours is really considered not bad already, though not perfect as we want it to be. Maybe we can start another opposition party n get voted in n make some noise. :D

Those isolated incidents hardly make a dent in the huge world trends.

Every sane country is making friends with China and India, and hoping to gain something from Asia.

  • Anonymous:

Aligator on Wed, 10th Feb 2010 1:02 am

That is where exactly your argument is misplaced. The issue is relative imbalance of foreign dependency and vulnerability. Look at South Korea, they have a very strong domestic sector that is integrated to match global consumer and industrial demand. And we?

Cockroach capitalism depends on foreign investment, foreign labour and now low-productivity foreign low-quality migrants – DISPLACING DOMESTIC ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND SURVIVABILITY FOR THE FUTURE

  • Anonymous:

    @ anonymous on Wed, 10th Feb 2010 1:39 am

You are obviously uninformed or biasedly informed.

“Those isolated incidents hardly make a dent in the huge world trends.”

Try applying for an offshore oil exploration permit in Vietnam or PRC or Japan. In Vietnam, you spend huge millions on exploration drilling first and then they decide to grant or not to grant you a percentage of concession exploration rights AFTER THAT. You don’t get exploration rights, then spend your exploration risks dollar. Try Timore Leste. Try getting mining rights in PRC, Mongolia or Russia. Or try exploration rights in Venezeula. I will see how smart you are.

HUGE GLOBAL TREND? The verbosity of your language of these three words hid your ignorance – carelessly or deliberately. The only global trend is the trend you read in biased media sources, you need to detox your learning process, information sources and discover the reality of the world.

“Every sane country is making friends with China and India”

So country “not making friends” with India or China is “insane” by default? India has rich resources, how many foreign mining giants are there? Tell me – be these from USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil and how big are global MNC chasing up to India’s opportunities? You never heard of google threatening to pull out and Australia’s iron-ore contract of 2009 (already supplied) not negotiated of agreed pricing whilst Japan and South Korea and European steel manufacturers already settled? The realities of global business is way beyond “making love”

If you want to be informed, read well beyond your brainwashing “domesticated” MSM.

Even with all your small tiny examples, China is still going to be the number 2 economy, and Asia is going to be a very important economic region. You don’t know?

  • Anonymous:

anonymous on Wed, 10th Feb 2010 10:12 pm

China is going to be number 2. I am aware of that BUT IT IS CONDITIONAL on unlimited raw material and energy supply going forward.

With Australia, Canada and USA shut-out, don’t be too sure China can find iron-ore, copper, zinc, metallurgical coal, oil and gas and uranium ( currently negotiating an estimated US$60 billion metallurgical coal with mining magnate, Clive Palmer) and consolidation of mining industries worldwide,China might find development path blocked or slowed down to a crawl by material shortages and costs.

If you looked at the mines they bought in South America, they are remote, politically volatile of domestic politics and NOT fantastically huge. China invested heavily in mining industries in Africa and there is also strong resurgence of nationalism there. You cannot build urbanization and industrialization the same pace as they did in the last 20 years -BECAUSE OF RESOURCES DEPLETION WORLD WIDE from iron-ore, copper, nickel oil and gas, to coal, to nuclear energy. Even now, China faced energy constraints.

China’s need for material resources faced stiff competition from Japan, Korea and now increasingly India and other emerging economies as well. Koreans and Japanese investment in mining industries abroad faced less problems than Chinese because foreigners, rightly or wrongly perceives Chinese state-owned enterprise is as much political as economic or more likely political of drive for global domination. That is why CNOOC’s investment in Unocal was blocked, its investments in mining industries also blocked in Canada and Australia except smaller projects of not much significance.

China also faced other major problems aging population and environmental degradation that must be contained. They will slow down too inevitably. When they cannot look after themselves, how can they lift the world like Singapore. It is fallacy to assume that China’s progress is complementary to Singapore and rest of Asia, I am more incline to believe it is competitive – taking on Korea, Japan and India and Singapore will be hard hit as well.

    http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific_business/view/1036278/1/.html

This kind of complementation business might not last as US becomes more aggressive of preserving its own economic sectors.
