Online brothels becoming more popular with Singapore youth

Written by Our Correspondent

Online brothels offering girls from various nationalities are becoming increasingly popular among Singapore men looking for a quickie, especially the youth.

Frequent raids on the red-light district of Geylang had forced the freelance prostitutes to retreat to cyberspace to solicit for customers.

As many as five new websites have appeared in the last few months alone offering a myriad of “services” from sexy massage to discreet sexual encounters from freelance prostitutes.

Some appear to be websites set up by organized syndicates while others are hosted by independent freelance prostitutes themselves who are here in Singapore to make a quick buck.

Online prostitution is not new in Singapore. Famous sex forum Sammyboy has a dedicated “freelance” section to allow prostitutes and pimps alike to post their services and contacts.

One owner of such a site claimed he is a “landlord” who is helping his PRC tenants to earn some “extra cash”.

The photos of the girls are listed on the site including their “statistics”, prices, types of services offered and “field reports” from previous patrons.

Propsective clients have to contact the pimp directly using the handphone number provided who will inform him of the time and venue for the “transaction” to take place.

Such online brothels are seeing an increase in business lately as they offer customers the flexibility to choose their time and girl as well as a place outside the usual red-light district to pursue their pleasures.

When interviewed by the Straits Times, Dr Carol Balhetchet, director of youth services at the Singapore Children’s Society, said:

“The scary part is prostitution has come to your doorstep – and it’s not just available to adults…..the scary part about the young is, they want to experiment. Now, they don’t need to go to Geylang…Prostitution can be more gypsy-like…In that sense, it’s risky.”

Unlike licenced prostitutes working in designated brothels, freelance prostitutes who ply their trade online do not need have to go for monthly medical examation and blood tests to detect sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV.

With the two Integrated Resorts set to open this year, the demand for such online sexual services is likely to increase especially with Singapore’s lax immigration and travel restrictions.

Foreign prostitutes especially those from China often come to Singapore to “work” on a one-month tourist visa.

Others come on a two-year student visa ostensibly to study in private institutions, but end up working in KTV lounges.

Asked about the online brothels by the Straits Times, the police would only say: ‘Police will investigate reports made and take action if any offence is disclosed.’

The police did not say whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the online brothels which have been in existence for Singapore for a very long time already.

  • Prostitution is the world’s oldest profession. The action of controlling and curtailing it, is almost close of Mission Impossible.

Now one may argue to morality of this – but let’s face it. One party needs fast money and the other needs sex – it’s a perfectly legitimate business process.

Singapore Police Forces’ efforts, in cleaning up Geylang – though effective superficially – will only produce nothing but detrimental effects onto the Singapore society.

Will these illegal businesses fade away? No. They will just go underground and conduct using a different medium – which in this case is Cyberspace.

At least in the past, while these illegal businesses are plying their trades – they were mostly congregated amass in a geographical location – which can be monitored, tracked and enforced upon – accompanied-vices like gambling/drugs/gangs can be effectively controlled to a tolerated minimal.

By forcing them into cyberspace – SPF has LOST this effective arm of policing. Whereas in the past, most people have to traverse to Geylang for solicitation – now they can do it right at their doorstep, right in their house, right in OUR neighborhoods – island-wide.

An analogy of what SPF has done – “instead of containing a small lump mass of benign tumor, in a non-critical anatomy area; they have dispersed that lump into untraceable bits and pieces of malignant cells throughout the ENTIRE body”

Which is better? Which is worse?

Please do not blame the prostitutes or the pimps for this. Lest we forget – Supply will NOT have existed, if there was NO demand.

Hypothetically, even if the immigration laws were tighten – as long as the demand is there and people are WILLING to pay for such services – supply will still come (i.e. snakeheads, illegal immigrants); or if you do so detest foreigners…. maybe you would rather our OWN locals step up to these “service” roles instead – locals like your wives, your daughters, your sisters?

*Assuming* that the demand stays the same and the supply was artificially lowered (immigration laws and police curtails) – price will inevitably increase – eventually to the rates where some locals are “willing” to consider, thus the equalization action on the supply curve – resulting in a new demand/supply equilibrium, except that it would have MORE negative impact on OUR society.

So who’s the ultimate source of these problems?

Look in the mirror – it’s us – MAN. Our thirst for Lust is inbuilt into our nature, like our capacity for Love – for to say “Man is pervert” is the same as saying “dogs are animals”.

This is what we are – this is WHO we are; for if we are any better than that, we should NOT be considered Man – the correct term would be “GOD”.

    What do you reckon?

I would like to agree with what Tony Pang has said. “Supply will NOT have existed, if there was NO demand”. Well said. this is free market economy. this business will never run out for the next few centuries.

  • True Singaporean:

    @Peter Pang,

“Prostitution is the world’s oldest profession. ”…..you say?Nah !..Because slavery and pimping and agriculture are the world’s oldest profession.

”Supply will NOT have existed, if there was NO demand. ”……you say ?.. err are you saying demand ALONE increases supply?..or can an increase in supply also lead to an equal increase in supply? The price factor lah…This is exactly what is happening in the sex industry in Singapore today.Sex for sale is far cheaper now than in the 80s.How can any economist rationalize that given the purchasing power parity of the 80s compared to a good 20 years later(read inflation). !!!

Your further justifications are merely bordering on popular myths. Why?

Because that men need sex therefore prostitution must exist. and that prostitution is a natural form of human sexuality is false. The fact is that having sex with prostitutes is not “sex” for women in it or per ce. Most men who use women in prostitution have other sexual partners.

The real reason why prostitution should not go rampant ,emphasis RAMPANT, is because of the of CRIMINAL element involved- pimps and traffickers.

This is the portfolio of SPF and the very reason why it exists ; to stamp out criminality.Just as pests like rats alone are not detrimental to human health but the virus it carries is.After all rats & mosquitoes are merely doing the very basic for it’s survival why should we than go about destroying God given lives?..That says all.

  • True Singaporean:

    Typo,

//”Supply will NOT have existed, if there was NO demand. ”……you say ?.. err are you saying demand ALONE increases supply?..or can an increase in supply also lead to an equal increase in supply? The price factor lah…//

    please read above as:-

”Supply will NOT have existed, if there was NO demand. ”……you say ?.. err are you saying demand ALONE increases supply?..or can an increase in supply also lead to an equal increase in DEMAND ?The price factor lah…

  • Becca D'Bus:

I still await the day that an article about sex work in SIngapore speaks of sex workers with respect.

There are so many ways in which the criminilization of sex work is plainly wrong, and as has been proven by its ineffectiveness, wrongheaded.

  • Clement Tan:

“maybe you would rather our OWN locals step up to these “service” roles instead – locals like your wives, your daughters, your sisters?”

This is very insulting. It is akin to saying that Mr Pang’s mother will resort to prostitution if given enough financial incentives (worse still be raped by local men), just because not enough sex workers are brought in.

Please if men want paid sex, they can always go to neighboring countries with more permissive laws like Thailand. No one stopping them.

  • True Singaporean:

    @Becca D’Bus ,

I agree with you that sex workers deserve some respect because prostitution does no harm, has no victims, and is sex among consulting adults. But sex-industry usually goes with criminal elements. This is true in the entire globe.Sex workers are not criminals. But the operators are;namely pimps and traffickers.

But does it just stop there ?Hell ,No !–criminals creep in and takeover.

Even in countries where prostitution is legal it is still subjected to horde lot of laws and by-laws.For instance sex with minors is a major crime ,whether consented or not.So a line has to be drawn somewhere .Sex would be even safer if regular health check is mandatory for sex-workers.

That is the gist of the issue we have now have in hand.

“The real reason why prostitution should not go rampant ,emphasis RAMPANT, is because of the of CRIMINAL element involved- pimps and traffickers.”

Er, money lending also brings into it CRIMINALITY.

I suggest, based on your argument, that it should also be proscribed!

To remove the criminal element in prostitution, perhaps the govt should legalise the profession and allow, say, NTUC to operate the brothels.

Oh by the way, Admin, care to provide the URL of Internet sites besides sammyboy? LOL

  • Clement Tan:

Funnily enough, both Christian fundamentalists and feminists would have common ground on prostitution.

  • LeeKeeSee:

  • Concerned Citizen:

It’s interesting to ask what will our minister of MCYS reactions to this issue. It involves YOUTH isn’t?

  • Concerned Citizen:

Since we all agree that prostitution is an age old ‘profession’, there is nothing much we can do other than more aggressive policing and enhance the current anti-vice unit. However stricter law enforcement is not targeting the root cause and prevention of HIV and STD. I feel it should start from education the public and sex education in schools on the danger of patronising prostitutes to your health, family lives and reputation. Alternatively, we can legalise and control prostitution so as to have a tighter control on monthly health checks at Kelantan Clinic and it could have a positive effect in reducing locally contracted HIV infection rates.

God has to live in him. With God in him the s’pore youth will surely know the way to live. S’pore has much bread but no healing grace of God. This is the folly of the pap govt.

Different vices have different implication and by passing such a self-rightteous sarcasm such as this,i expect you to be smarter or more reasoning even if you don’t neccessarily possess common wisdom.
i wish you are more sensible and i don’t intend to LOL

  • Becca D'Bus:

I’d suggest that not all feminists would see sex work in a negative light.

I agree that prostitution often come connected with crime. BUT we need to ask ourselves why.

repeatedly, we bring up issues like pimps. The example described in the article of freelance sex work, advertised on websites, appears to remove this element.

We need to be thinking critically about how to do the following:

de-criminalize sex work. Of all sorts. If the sex is legal, the sex work should be too (wise asses who want to bring up underaged sex, you can stop)

de-stigmatize sex work. In so many ways, all people use sex to teir gain. sex work in this regard is no different.

empower sex workers. policy about sex work cannot effectively be made without the input of sex workers themselves.
It is only then, that Singapore can effectively have a conversation about how to increase the benefits and reduce the harm of a sex industry.

  • Anonymous:

笑贫不笑娼(laugh on the poor but not on the prostitutes)。who tell you to be poor? even prostitutes get to earn money and contribute to GDP!

  • fair and square:

    @Becca D’bus
have you considered that legalising sex industry may lead to more “criminal” acts like “sexploitation” of the young and even
    adults?
as in drug-trafficking,many “innocent” people are inadvertantly and unwittingly FORCED into the crime by “crooks”/gangsters.
though i am not, with my own moral reasons, for prostitution,i respect each individual’s choice in life as only the individual
will answer and face all the consequences she/he has made.
having said that, you must agree that the young are very vulnerable to be subjected to abuse by greedy adults who may
cajoled by force or crooked means to prostitute unwillingly for money?
look at so-called “free sex” countries like the USA and at once you notice the wayward behaviour of precocious school-kids.As LOVING and RESPONSIBLE parents and adults,do we really
want to lead our children into scuh profession or give them
other options in life by fuarding and guidine them away from
any kind of vices as much as possible.
I may not be totally right to compare “sexploitation” to drug
trafficking or “freelance sex” to “drug abuse” but to me,they
both ultimately lead people, especially our young, ASTRAY.
Again,at this juncture,i humbly must concede that for adults
    like you,it’s a personal choice.
    there are so many different avenues for people to make a living ,some faster,some slower;some more moral,others less so;
some would cause harm to oneself and others, others charitable.
IT’S UP TO US.GROWN AND THINKING ADULTS, TO CHOOSE BUT SAD TO SAY,LEGALISING PROSTITUTION IS TO ME AKIN TO LEGALISING DRUG
TRAFFICKING AS BOTH ARE IN GRAVE DANGER OF BEING SUBJECT,NOT ONLY TO ABUSE, BUT MORE SO TO tremendous exploitation of young
    teenagers and even innocent adults.
It’s difficult to say when we ‘cross the line’ between “freelance” or vouluntary/willing to being UNFAIRLY FORCED into such a profession?
like i say,it’s your call provided you “walk the line”…can those who propose legalising the SEX INDUSTRY assure this?
    thank-you and GOD BLESS!

  • tht:

At the end of the day, one’s value prevail. Sex industry is everywhere in every country. in cyberspace or not, doesn’t matter.

Just spend more time communicating and share the true values with your kids / wife / friends. this is the only way to protect them.

  • kk:

    @tht
    it’s easier say than done.
though what you said is true of what is happenning ,we should not simply allow it to be made even more “self-fulfilling”at the expense of the continuous degeneration of our moral bearing.
look at some of our school kids, they treat “sex” so casually.
they can even sell their bodies for a “gucci” or “prada”.
do we want to go the way of some western countries?
and what if they get pregnant…simply go for abortion?
if this be the case,it would unwittingly lead faster to ageing population problems than we can imagine as sex has now become
as casual as drinking water instead of its more solemn role of procreation?
