The YPAP member who posted Alex Tan’s past detention during his National Service on Facebook to taunt and discredit him is a grassroots leader in Eunos under Aljunied GRC.
The comment was posted in the midst of a heated exchange between Alex and the YPAP members on a YP Community Project – “Skating with students from Pathlight” held on 7 November when volunteers of YP Community brought a group of students from Pathlight School to have a skating experience in East Coast Park.
Pathlight is a special school offering mainstream academics to students with autism. It is also the first autism-focused school in Singapore that offers a unique blend of mainstream academics and life readiness skills.
(Two years ago, the Workers’ Party’s application for a permit to hold a cycling event at East Coast Park was rejected. Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs Ho Peng Kee told WP’s Sylvia Lim in parliament that such activities “have the potential for public disorder and mischief, and may disrupt community life.”)
Alex charged that the YPAP is using taxpayers’ monies to score political points and claimed that he is doing “National Service” by stopping its “propaganda” on Facebook:
“PAP-organized community work, be it voluntary or remunerated, fronts PAP’s name and therefore is a political tool, yes or no?… Is the PAP community work funded through taxpayers money”
He also berated YPAP Chairman Teo Ser Luck for not standing up to scrutiny:
“Teo Ser Luck: do you think your $15000/mth salary puts you in a moral high ground such that you can treat ordinary Singaporeans like your servants? Be a politician and stand up to scrutiny. this is a chance for you to score political points. let’s see if you indeed deserve such obscene salary.”
Alex was lambasted immediately by YPAP members for being “childish” and “hot-headed”.
That’s when a YPAP member by the name of Sear Hock Rong stepped in and attacked Alex by addressing him as “alex zhixiang tan who was charged with ‘general disobedience”:

According to information posted on his blog, Hock Rong mentioned that he just completed his National Service not too long ago.
It is not known if he belonged to the same camp as Alex. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (correction made on 17 Dec 2009) after his NS before setting up a start-up of his own.
Though Alex has been relentless in his hard-hitting criticisms of the PAP, he did not attack the character of any YPAP member.
YPAP Chairman Teo Ser Luck was in the discussion as well, but did not condemn Hock Rong for revealing confidential information about Alex.
It is unbecoming for a YPAP member and grassroots leader to resort to such petty name-calling in order to destroy the credibility of a critic.
What is more glaring is Mr Teo’s nonchalant attitude which suggests that he condones such behavior.
Now that Alex’s past DB record had been picked up by the press from the YPAP Facebook and released to public, Mr Sear Hock Rong should issue an open apology to Alex.
Mr Teo should explain why he did not put a stop to the taunts and vibes YPAP members have directed at Alex when he was aware of the content of the conversation all along.
Furthermore, the relevant authorities should investigate if the revelation of Alex’s DB record contravenes Section 5 of the Official Secrets Act (CAP 213).
A soldier’s detention record during National Service is classified information and should not be released to the public unless specifically asked for by the Home Affairs Ministry or Attorney-General Chambers.
For a political party which prides itself on the rule of law, it is a shame that its Youth Wing has degenerated into such a sorry state.

Is this NOT a picture of overwhelming numbers and over-bearing attack of one critical thoughts? What is Alex DB is of relevance and HOW DID THEY KNOW THE DB HAS ITS ORIGIN AND RELEVANCE IN ALLEGED BAD MANNERS?
Is it necessary of these provocations in a reasoned and rational debate?
Could Alex have been through DB on another disputed cause irrelevant to alleged “bad manners” and subsequently having him shut out of discourse on those alleged grounds?
Unless one is privvy to interactions involving the DB matters, it is purely speculative – as Alex is the only involved party and MINDE. Is it not true?
What happened to a rational dialogue sought with citizenry or citzenry sought dialogue of rational debate of any subject.
Alex is one person, the rest is multiples. Should the lone minority voice be subject to such seemingly harsh unconscionable diatribe by a numerical superiority?
I would have prefered to see Golaith behaves with a little bit more decorum towards David even if David is provocative of inconvenient probing.
Anyone subsequently claiming high moral grounds needs to demonstrate that such standards of public behaviour. Does anyone disagree??

This guy, Sear, owes all NS men and explanation on how he got this information and why he decided to make it public.
Based on what I read in the discussion, or flame war, if one wants to put it that way, Alex had two legitimate questions.
First, was there any political agenda in organizing such an event, considering that the police had previously considered WP’s cycling trip to be a political event?
Second, was this event funded by taxpayer money, or was it funded by public donations made directly to the YPAP and other independent sources?
I felt that it was really unfortunate that Alex chose to bombard Teo Ser Luck with questions about his pay and so on. While these are relevant questions to ask a minister, they have nothing to do with the YPAP Community event.
It is even more telling, however, when we see that Alex’s questions remain unanswered and most of the YPAP members chose to give irrelevant responses about Alex being very free, or about how his boss wouldn’t be very happy.
what temasek review should do is ask mindef how someone’s confidential info can be leaked out and whether or not action should be taken against sear hock rong
Firstly, DB or not, any citizen with a point make a stand… Sear is still too young, he shouldn’t bring in irrelevant things, since entering DB doesn’t mean a guy is bad.
Secondly, both sides are too excited… I don’t like that ‘SHUT UP’. YPAP is no AWARE conference, learn from it.
Thirdly, some people said Alex himself shared his DB info in other forums. So we have to see whether it was leaked or whether it was inferred on legal issue. But I must stress, stay relevant on the issue, this is the BASIS of racial or social harmony~ Even those with Yellow Ribbon can have their own views and expressions.
Fourthly, OK, still not happy… go and fight lah~ Yes. Ser Luck should have stepped in and stopped this from getting so ugly in his turf. And please, don’t delete YPAP facebook after deleting the forum just because of this sort of things. The PM will inevitably be watching this show… Most likely the MM as well. I am as well… watching.

Hock Rong has many years of experience in leadership training and event management. During his school days, he organised and participated in countless major school events and overseas youth exchange programmes as an active student leader. NOP, this YPAPies already left the SAF and thus is not appropriate to apply the SAF Act in this instance, except under very rare circumstances.
There are plenty of appropriate section under the Penal Code to nail the culprit.

Unless it is a matter of National Security, the SAF will NOT act against someone related to the PaPies, needless to say.
Furthermore, there exist NO formal or official complaint from the ‘victim’ to the relevant authorities nor did ANYONE write in to the AGC to inform them of such an incident. YES, you heard me right, ANYONE can report such an incident, as a matter of public interest and concern BUT not as ANONYMOUS.
So the system and those at the top will do what they do best, see no evil, hear no evil.

Although I have been sticking to camp advices on my RT, and other issues, but recently they placed me in the defaulter side by changing the records WHEN they had the physical copy of the Medical Excuse from camp Medical Centre.

Nop, not entirely true. Alex was punished if I am not mistaken when he was in full time NS. A civilian cannot be punished under the SAF Act unless for offences related to in camp, ippt, recall, the sorts.
While it is NOT entirely impossible for the SAF Act to be used on this joker, it is highly unlikely that it will be.
The PC (ie: Penal Code) like I said, already has this area fully covered, no point using the SAF Act.
@military_mutiny , quite true. There is nothing wrong with revealing the names and addresses of SAF regulars anyway, names and addresses of anyone is not a secret nor classified information.
But then one must be wary of the ‘catch all’ clause of the SAF Act, ie: Conduct prejudice to the good order and discipline of the SAF, bla bla bla which allows for ANYONE subject to Military Laws to be charged for ANYTHING, Kangaroos or No Kangaroos irrelevant.
This is a fail safe catch-all charge which NO LEGAL COUNSEL in the world can defend and get an acquittal from, just like the ISA.

well well, looking at the exchange between alex and hock rong, i find what alex said was very true. especially the part about grassroots members, rc committee members and pa members being under the umbrella of pap ie politically affiliated.
those who claim not, should recollect that the upgrading of hdb news in oppo wards had to be conveyed first to the pap minions rather than the elected mps.

as a parent, i wld not want to entrust my sons to his care as a “leadership” mentor.
the reason is simple.
hong rock had not shown any maturity of mind when he persistently goaded alex and flamed on. a more balanced sensible approach wld be similar to what li yong wrote.
both seemed hot-headed, although one went over board.

alex tan was not in the YPAP network for debate and discussion. he was there to create havoc, n to be banned ..so that he can claim that YPAP ’shunned’ him n his view.
this is not a new game; this game has been played over n over again by non other than the disobedience-grandMaster Chee SJ.
chee would intentionally do things outside the law, he’ll then fined, n then he refused to pay fine, as a result he’ll go to jail. all these r played ..so he can claimed that he is jailed for expressing his view. but get this straight, he is FINED. he’s jalied for refusing to pay the fine.
n of coz, as the game played on, he’ll frequently talk about his jail term in the same breath as he mention Aung SSK, M Gandhi, etc. well, some people believes him n think of him as democracy hero.
frankly, i expect nothing less from a PhD holder in Psychology ..in terms of ability to bend facts n influence people.
HOWEVER, it is what it is: disobedience.
now, all of u who said that Alex Tan’s DB record was secret and whoever put it in public must be punished, DO YOU STILL STAND BY YOUR VIEW ?

if he were a foreign talent, he would not have been to DB.
all i feel is a sense of pity, and i understand the anger and hatred people like alex tan feel.
and people like him will support the opposition as long as he lives.
the question is: will the many local singaporeans who were made to do NS not enrolled in our local universities do the same?
these guys are just into their mid, late twenties and early thirties who have experienced the china influx.
