Dr Mahathir pours scorn on Lee Kuan Yew’s oratory skills in documentary about him
Written by our Correspondent
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed has poured scorn on the oratory skills of Singapore’s former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in a documentary – “Mahathir” shown on the Starhub History Channel last Sunday at 8pm.
The two-part documentary relates the tumultuous political career of Dr Mahathir who lost his parliamentary seat in the 1969 election and was sacked from his party UMNO before making a stunning comeback as Education Minister in 1974.
Dr Mahathir was to become Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister in 1981. He is credited with modernizing Malaysia which was largely an agricultural country back then.
The elder statesman was no fan of Lee and had several heated arguments with him in the Dewan Rakyat when Singapore was part of Malaysia in the period 1963 – 65.
In the documentary, Dr Mahathir criticized Lee for his propensity to give long speeches. He claimed that Lee became flustered after he interjected his speech repeatedly with sharp questions which he could not answer.
Both parties almost come to blows with each other in a heated exchange on 25 September 1964 when Dr Mahathir (then MP for Alor Star) made the following stinging remark towards Lee in the Dewan Rakyat:
“They (Singaporean Chinese) have never known Malay rule and cannot bear the idea that the people they have so long kept under their heels should now be in a position to rule them.”
Lee Kuan Yew shot back:
“Of course there are Chinese millionaires in big cars and big houses. Is it
the answer to make a few Malay millionaires with big cars and big houses? … If we delude people into believing that they are poor because there are no Malay rights or because opposition members oppose Malay rights, where are we going to end up?”
Relationships between Singapore and Malaysia were prickly during Mahathir’s reign as Prime Minister and were frequently strained over unresolved bilateral issues like the sale of water to Singapore from the southern state of Johor.
Lee did not visit Dr Mahathir during his recent visit to Malaysia in June which drew a sarcastic remark from the latter than he was not a important figure.
True to his combative nature, Dr Mahathir wrote an acerbic article on his blog chedet lampooning Lee as a “little emperor”:
“During Lee Kuan Yew’s triumphant visit to Malaysia he made it known to the Malaysian supplicants that Singapore regards the lands within 6000 miles radius of Singapore as its hinterland. This includes Beijing and Tokyo and of course Malaysia……..All those who met the great man from the little country were lectured on how Malaysia should be run. We should not have anymore problems now. We have been told the direction to take……I have a lot more to say about this little Emperor but I will reserve it for later.”
Surprisingly, the litigious Lee has never sued Dr Mahathir for defamation in court despite the latter’s obvious contempt for him.
In fact, Lee was forced to issue a rather humiliating public apology to the Malaysian government led by Dr Mahathir in 1997 when he made disparaging remarks about Johor being an unsafe place “notorious for shootings, robberies and car-jacking” in an affidavit filed against WP candidate Tang Liang Hong for defamation.
The second part of the documentary will be shown this Sunday at 8pm on History Channel (Starhub Channel 9).

Incredible foresight by LKY. I am glad Singapore is kicked out from Malaysia. A blessing in disguise.

Mahathir’s real Indian Moslem name is Mohmmed Kutty s/o Ibrahim. This was what He was known as back then when studying in Singapore’s Medical School. And to become “Malay” he and his descendents now are previleged “bumiputras” for State handouts & entitlements.
He was once interviewed by the Australian press about the infamous NEP (ongoing for more than 40 years) that discriminates against its non-Moslem citizens in all spheres.
Cunning as he was he blamed it on the then PM Razak (father of MongolainNajib) for initiating it and that he had no part in it.
Lately, in support of UMNO against Pakatan, when his son who is now a State Cabinet Minister, he decalred that the NEP should continue indefinitely. If you had read in the press, his reason has also changed (perhaps after seeing how the Chinese in China, Taiwan, HK and Singapore perform)from the Chinese swindling the Malays to “how to compete with a people with a 5 000 years old civilization”.

That guy is a real sicko.
He spewed poison & bit his successor, Badawi, almost daily, after Badawi failed to carry on with his projects (presumably some undertable work has taken place) upon his ascension.
It’s obvious that personal interest came first than the party then. The rest is history. Badawi eventually had to bow out.
Remember when Najib was appointed PM, Marthathir was among the first to personally visit him to offer well wishes. Guess who he brought along with him. What happened next is anyone guess.

For the information of some readers from our newer generation, LKY started the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Malaysia in the early 60’s with the object of contesting the Malaysian elections and if, upon winning it, to supplant himself as the PM of Malaysia (Singapore was too small a country for him to rule – his ego was already stretched long ago in his youth).
And he was attacked in one of his campaign trails in Malaysia during that period when he was edged into a drain and one of his bodyguards was stabbed while protecting him. The Malay ground was not with him and this was the precipice which forced the then Malaysian PM, Tengku Abdul Rahman, with the decision to throw Singapore out of the federation in the interests of preventing racial strife and riots from destroying the country. This was a consensual agreement as LKY finally realised that he could not play his ego card on the Malays even though he had a very good grounding in the language. This Baba son grew up without speaking a single word of Chinese dialect or Mandarin in his youth.
He only learned Hokkien through a crash course in the late fifties when he contested the 1959 municipal elections because he needed to win over the Hokkien ground, as this was the dialect that touched base with the people. His current focus on Mandarin (partly because of commercial interests and partly because it was a condition imposed by the then Chinese strong man, Deng Xiao Peng, in 1985 in return for China’s withdrawal of support for the Malayan Communist Party) is destroying our cultural roots here. He doesn’t know that there is actually no such thing as a Mandarin culture – there is only a Hokkien culture, a Cantonese culture, a Teochew culture, and so on. The Chinese in China have cultures that are reflective of the region they live or come from. Mandarin is only a unifying language they use, a common tool of communication for a vast population speaking in so many indigenous languages. In fact, Mandarin was only a language of the elites and were spoken mainly in the capital and administrative cities in earlier times.
Every sociologists know for a fact that language is born and shaped by indigenous factors. The culture of any society is based on its environment, and shaped by them. Shifts in population patterns also result in shifts in cultural practices, and these also take into account certain aspects of Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection.
This guy made a lot of mistakes in the past. But these were quickly swept aside under the rug by compliant lieutenants who would immediately come to his rescue by creating distractions elsewhere. We have seen this being done many times before.

MM really had great foresight & we are lucky Singapore sepreated. In fact many of the malays are not bhumiputra’s at all (like Mahatir) but simply immigrants from Indonesia & India.
The real bhumiputras are the ‘Orang Asli’, they are not muslim and since the Malaysian govt can’t bear this they put islamic conversion certificates along with RM 500 notes through their doors. In fact even the word bhumi-putra (meaning son of the soil) comes from Sanskrit (original Indian language).
If one takes hikes in the Cameron Highlands and meets the ‘Orang Asli’ villagers they will relate their plight. So much for a moderate islamic state.

I think that while many of us are not comfortabl with the hard handed tactics of LKY, there are some things that we have to give him credit for.
I do not dooubt “Justice for all” says about him being an egomaniac. In fact, I suspect that the hardline tactics that they employ during the elections are primarily stemmed from a contempt for the inability of the general populace to think rationally for themselves and possibly elect a government that works. You would find it hard to convince me that a totally new government would be so inept that the foundations that have been laid and largely managed via various sub-hierachies of government and statutory boards would crumble. Of course, we have never been given the chance to witness this for ourselves so it is all speculation at this point.
But I digress. The thing that I really want to say most about LKY is that for a man that is supposedly hugely egotistical, he is able to change with the winds very easily and has no qualms about getting down and dirty to ensure that his plans succeed. It would be much easier to be stubborn and not come down from his pedestal and not bother to learn dialects and mandarin or pander to the whims of countries that we have been economically dependent on.
Is LKY a man that is hugely misunderstood and just a typical overachiever who happens to be in power?

When MM descended into the Malaysian Parliament then he being a seasoned lawyer spoke in eloquent Malay; better than the Malaysian Malays. Arguing passionately for a “Malaysian Malaysia” not a “Malay Malaysia”.
That sent shivers down the spines of ultras like Mad-hathir Kutty & his fellow cronies.
Seats were subsequently lost in Singapore & 1 in Malaysia to the PAP/DAP. Mind you these were Malay majority wards!
What did Md-hathir & his henchmen Dato Harun do is history. The Tengku was then maneuvered out and May 13 descended upon Malaysia engineered by you-know-who to enact the now infamous NEP. 1000s perished. In fact, Mad-hathir has the blood of innocent defenceless citizens on his hands.
Surprisingly, the Malays today from both sides of the causeway took abt 40 years to realise what MM said 40 years ago to be true. That he could give a better life to all. Today S$1 = RM2.5 and our Singaporean Malays in this resourceless, tiny islnad has an average per capita income that is much higher than their counterparts across the causeway where land, minerals, water, energy, etc., are in abundance.
Now we know why Pakatan has come about when the non-Muslim Indians & Chinese votes alone don’t count after millions of Muslim Indonesians have been imported over the years to become Malaysians as well. Some time ago, an UNMO Minister of Turkish descent, Hishammudin was shown on national tv brandising the dagger (kris) for you-know-who to see and to submit to the apartheid NEP.
Reflect . . . That’s history.

Mahathir claimed to be 22 years as 4th PM of Malaysia & also the longest yet most ineffective to bring Malaysians togetherness as a cohesive family in dream of a world’s nation with colourful & multi-racial & mutlti-religion rich in history among Southeast Asia. He could has worked out the standard of international language English for better & high standard of competitive leverage for all Malaysians in today global world but he failed/ignored to do so. He borrowed time/money to build/waste so much national resources on none productive twin towers & white elephant Putra Jaya. He is afraid of competiting with Singapore to bring up Johor Bahru as vibrant city! He misused his power to let Eastern Malaysia far behind in term of education, social influx of activities & its growth & development. He was the most pwoerful PM that Malaysia had ever produced but he failed to do a good job because he couldn’t even pass the baton to a qualified person after retired not to mention to breed & train up new generations for better Malaysia. Rich Malays become richer, poor Malays become poorer not to mention the hard fighting non-Malays or non-Bumiputra. Not even the best national project of North-South highway in Peninsular Malaysia can erase his poor judgment in overall Malaysia Contribution. I am sad today Najib had to use 1MALAYSIA instead of Malaysians Malaysia to cover up the losing ground.

Despite the aggravation and ill-intent remarks made by this pariah, LKY never went down to his level nor respond or acknowledge his existence which further infuriates his nemesis. Mahathir and Lee Kwan Yew are two sides of the same coin. In both countries, it’s the unfortunate citizens that suffer daily and have to put up with the whims and fancies of these high flying know it all masters of the rear orifices. In Singapore the malays and indians have long suffered as second class citizens in the country that they were born in, the country that they gave up years of their lives serving National service and contributed to ‘Nation (PAP) Building’ by supporting the economy. Just one example to prove my point, when I wanted to buy a shoe box from HDB, I could not choose the house i liked being one of the minority races. You all know why. The chinese can buy any house they want. I could go on giving many more examples but the purpose of this rant is not to put anyone to sleep. Malaysia is a mirror image, while the indians and chinese slog it out and support the economy as much as the next person, the malays receive free handouts of cash and land.
I recite from personal experience, in a REAL democracy, CITIZENS CAN NOT be discriminated against by virtue of their RACE, LANGUAGE, choice of RELIGION, choice of their ASSOCIATION with PEOPLE,GROUPS OR POLITICAL BELIEFS. (Basic human rights – does not apply to Singaporeans)
Remember the old American Express Card Advert? In Singapore, ‘Citizenship has no privileges’.
In Australia, for instance, one does NOT include in a job application or resume, the following information – RACE, LANGUAGE spoken or written (unless specifically pertaining to the job requirement eg. translator etc.), or RELIGION. This practice in itself prevents discrimination by potential employers. In fact, not even on official governments forms is this information requested. Remember any one form you filled up in Singapore that did not require that information? And guess what? The Aussies haven’t got a rubbish song like ‘one people, one nation. one stinkapore’. Most of these farts can’t remember two lines of their National Anthem (not a mandatory requirement to sing every morning in school in front of the flag).
Don’t get me wrong, they are the most patriotic people I’ve ever met. They love their country, not the song. they love their people not the dispensible man in office (elections not rigged). Each and every man and women I know will fight for their country if the need should arise (but no National Service- how silly – just ask LKY). I know because I live here now. Would you sincerely do that for Singapore (PAP)? Fight even if it kills you to safeguard…what? I don’t know, you tell me. We wouldn’t even fight for our rights as citizens, as humans, we wouldn’t stand up to discrimination, to multi-million dollar minister salaries, GST, GST increases, CPF con job, ERP everywhere, COE more than price of the car, cock-eyed immigration policies, the list will just go on and on and on. The morals and morale of the native Singaporean is down by the dumps. Lee Kwan Yew, do you sincerely believe that everyone of our men will stand and fight should a war break out? Or would they put their immediate family’s interest first and foremost like you’ve done all these years? Would YOUR family be in Singapore if a war broke out, or on a plane?
You see there is no Singapore. Singapore ceased to exist the day the sanskrit derived name Singa- Pura, or literally Lion-City was changed for a more idiot friendly Singapore. Well if it’s English, then Singa’s got no meaning in the dictionary, and pore is this spot on your face that you squeeze a pimple out of. Maybe it’s Singlish? PAP took the liberty then and they’ve been taking liberties ever since.
Singapore, or lack there of, has become synonymous with PAP. Singapore has lost it’s identity as a nation (see: K. Shanmugam) and along with it has lost the identity of it’s people. From its humble beginnings as a Kampung and dirt roads, Singapore is what it is today due to the tireless efforts of its only natural resource, its people. Many if not all believed in the ‘productivity’ bullshit the government fed us in the early days and we worked long hours for meagre wages. Guess what, nothing’s changed, except for those that advocated ‘productivity’. For those of you who put Lee Kwan Yew on a pedestal with his shrivelled up nuts on your chin all day, could this country have come this far if we had all refused to work? If we’d been lazy? Like the Malays in Malaysia? Of course it would’ve you say, Lee Kwan Yew’s never-ending and extremely articulate speeches would’ve still made Singapore what it is today, for he is god. Good on you.
Step by baby step these very people have been lied to repeatedly, belittled and made slaves by the very man and system that they believed in whole heartedly. These people will have reason to rejoice soon enough for nothing is forever. Even if no action is taken by the people to demolish PAP’s ivory tower, the senile old clown will kick the bucket soon enough. And then my fellow brothers and sisters, like they always do, things WILL change.
Cheers

Funny thing about millionaires, Malaysia probably has more ethnic Chinese millionaires (who are NOT government cronies) than Singapore ratio wise even after currency conversion.
Whether the profits made are ethical or not, that is another issue. It can be argued that UMNO’s NEP policies has engendered greater entrepreneurship in the Malaysian Chinese, however using the state’s machinery in the form of GLCs akin to PAP/Singapore they have tried to stifle Chinese entrepreneurship less successfully than Singapore. Not to say Singapore’s initially successful GLCs are now, in comparison, are being run better.

It is unfair that these 2 sick old fools, shd affect the neighbourliness and brotherhood of the citizens of both countries.
Why are the 2 Funky old men, internationaling their private feud at our expense?
Stop it and return us the long delayed peace that we are longing for.

Cmon guys…i feel tht LKY and Mahathir were both great leaders in their own right..revolutionizing their individual nations through tumultuous times..
Of cos no one is perfect and both have made mistakes..but both countries do enjoy more stability compared to many other countries in the world..much owing to policies implemented by these two “old men”..
Alas..as much as they have contributed the their respective nations..u cannot pls evrybody…and i personally hope tht in time LKY and Mahathir will put their differences aside and show each other the respect they much deserve…
and the same goes for us..we can criticize some of their decisions but we should not judge them on their character..as they are two of the greatest characters in political history..at least in my view…
