i find it an irony that while this website championed free speech and alternate views….at the same time, it wants some people who have a different perspective to “keep their mouth shut”.

Spot on. Everyone should have the right to say what he/she wishes.

BUT…. The opinion article actually brings up a good point- don’t criticise without empathising first.

That would mean free speech comes with a sense of responsibility not to say stupid/insensitive things that would inflame others.

The author is merely returning the favour to the person whose letter basically tells thousands of Singaporeans who are seeking better lives to shut up and put up.

Show me how “constructive” you can be with the remarks of Sam Ahmed. Our talented graduates migrating to Italy and Spain???
Maybe taxi driving is more exciting in Lagos in Nigeria or Chittaggong in “Blanga-land”?

Did he meant our graduates are better off meigration to emerging economies like Afghanistan and Mongolia WITH LOTS OF POTENTIAL waiting to blossom when the sun shine and rain drops some water to germinate poppy-growing?

But the title, manner and tone of the writing is more suited for a private emotional rant with close friends. Just doesn’t cut across as a contribution to an open discussion. Some editorial work before publication would have helped to ilicit responses of more constructive nature?

I agree with you. Due diligence indeed should be conducted by the purchaser, that’s the pre-eminent fiduciary duty which he must carry out. That’s why directors of company are so held accountable for their actions.

Unfortunately our big brains in Temasek are lacking in this area, at least manifestly so because of another incident. This relates to their purchase of Thaksin’s stake in Shincorp. At the time of purchase Shincorp had overdue outstanding tax liability of US $1.5 bn (approx?) yet unpaid but which was due that year. This amount was not taken into consideration by our big guns. Not a single member of parliament brought this particular aspect of a breach of fiduciary duty on the part of Temasek management.

However, having said that, I must also add that Bank of America acceded to the takeover of Merrill Lynch probably based on the the belief that they had the “cushion” of a sovereign fund stakeholder in Temasek, which can provide an avenue of emergency cash in case the worst scenerio happens.

I have enough of this foreign bullshit .. there too many of them, on the MRT, in the mall, in the restaurants, in my office. We should be Singa Land for foreigners instead.
