MM Lee urged Singporeans to “bear” with tide of foreigners
From our Correspondent
For the third time in a week, a senior leader of the cabinet had spoken on the issue of immigration, an indication of how serious the problem has become which may cause the ruling party to lose some votes in the coming elections.
A day after Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong had mused publicly about whether to allow immigrant “enclaves” to emerge in Singapore, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew exhorted Singaporeans to “put up” with the new immigrants in a tacit admission that a growing number of Singaporeans are unhappy with the government’s liberal immigration policy.
“The government looks closely at permanent residents’ (PRs) contributions to Singapore before deciding which ones can become citizens…..So please put up with the new immigrants. We are very careful about who becomes a citizen,” he said, responding to criticisms over the growing influx of foreigners living and working here.
There were more than 1.2million foreigners in Singapore last year. Singapore’s population has crossed the 5-million mark in June this year of which 36 per cent are non-Singaporeans. This means that one out of three people you meet in the streets is a foreigner.
MM Lee repeated the circular argument used by his son PM Lee that foreigners are needed to take up jobs shunned by Singaporeans without which Singapore’s economy will stagnate:
“Look at the Integrated Resorts. (On the) rooftop, not one (construction) worker there is a Singaporean. (They are) China Chinese and the Indians. If you don’t have that, where’s the IR, and the 10,000 jobs (they will create)?” he asked.
Singaporeans are aware of the need to have low-cost foreigners in certain sectors like the construction industry, but what they cannot comprehend is the ease at which PRs are given to foreigners who are neither educated or skilled.
For example, Ms Zhang Yuanyan, who caused a stir lately by publicly proclaiming her loyalty to China, came to Singapore on a students’ pass armed with only a diploma from an unknown institution in China.
Ms Zhang revealed that she got her Singapore PR within only 2 months of application when she found work as a Chinese language teacher in a private school. The authorities have yet to provide any explanation on how Ms Zhang became a Singapore PR in double-quick time when her English proficiency is a suspect.
A Singapore Indian told the state media that he was shocked to discover that his daughter was in the minority in a class of 15 out of which 13 are children of expat Indians. He expressed concerns about the future of his daughter who will have to compete with more and more foreigners.
Despite the rising resentment on the ground at the relentless influx of foreigners, the ruling party is adamant that it will not make any wholesale changes to its policy other than some minor “tweaks”.
A $10 million Community Integration Fund was unveiled lately to make the newcomers feel “welcomed” in Singapore. Ironically, the fund is contributed unwittingly by Singapore taxpayers.
The ruling party has also been actively recruiting new citizens and PRs to join grassroots organizations such as the Resident Committees. One PAP MP Charles Chong even remarked that foreigners are easier to “please” than Singaporeans.
The Straits Times has been publishing letters from PRs expressing their support and appreciation for the ruling party, the latest by a Sam Ahmed who condemned Singaporeans for not being “proud” of their countries.
Speaking to his constituents in English, Chinese and Malay, MM Lee urged them to bear with the tide of foreigners, ‘even if it’s making Singapore a little uncomfortable and cramped’. Initially, it was only a trickle, now the tide is becoming a storm.
In the past, Singapore has encouraged mainly Malaysians and Hong Kongers to take up citizenship to settle in Singapore. Since PM Lee took over as Prime Minister in 2003, the pace of immigration has accelerated.
Today, one can find new citizens hailing from many countries in the region – PRC, India, Philipines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand etc. Some of them cannot even speak proper English to communicate with the Malay and Indian minorities in Singapore.
Foreigners help to keep labor costs down and contribute to the country’s GDP figures. An unknown substantial portion of the ministers’ million-dollar salary is pegged to Singapore’s GDP growth rates.
Besides the economic benefits, new citizens who are largely ignorant of local politics will tend to vote for the ruling party which gives them the opportunity to start life afresh in Singapore thereby helping them to remain in power for quite some time to come.
Unless Singaporeans send a strong message to the ruling party in the next general election, they will find themselves having to “re-integrate” back into a new Singapore society dominated by foreigners in the not too distant future.

Why doesn’t the old fart talk about taking care of our own first before talking about being tolerant of FTs?
FTs come here and take up jobs that can be filled by Sinkies. What are old fart and his cronies doing about the thousands of Sinkies who are unemployed?
As far as I am concerned, old fart and his farting ministers have let down Sinkies. They have been in power for far too long and it is time they are held accountable for the outcome of their policies. I want to see strong opposition in power so that there can be a healthy check and balance to old fart and his other farts.

It is so funny that the self-serving ministers always use the constuction industry as example to illustrates that Singapore economy needs foreigner to fill the jobs shun by Singaporean.
While majority of the Singaporeans will agree that most Singaporeans shun jobs in the construction industry, what we are unhappy about is the jobs loss to foreigners in the IT, middle management, etcs which we Singaporeans are willing to take up provided we are not exploited with unreasonable low pay.
It is very clear that election is coming. These self-serving fat cats will only prevent to be listening and show that they care before the election.

…..”The government looks closely at permanent residents’ (PRs) contributions to Singapore before deciding which ones can become citizens…..So please put up with the new immigrants. We are very careful about who becomes a citizen….”
This statement raise many DISTURBING QUESTIONS unanswered.
Does it mean that the assessment in the grant of PR is either TOO LIBERAL, DUBIOUS OR OTHERWISE UNCERTAIN OF QUALITY INTAKE needing seemingly far more stringent assessment for citizenship application?
To avoid doubt, if the majority of PRs DO NOT meet our citizenship requirements, why are they AS A REDUNDANT LOAD FLOATING POPULATION hanging around with the GOVERNMENT’S WELCOME BLESSING, to gazump our limited housing supply agravating the housing crisis, displaced Singaporeans of job opportunities, adding to infrastructural overcrowding and aggravating our costs of living pressures?
The ECONOMICS OF TRUTH DOES NOT ADD UP.
Isn’t it INSANE OF POPULATION AND ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT?
If, on the other hand, we deny the claims of Government of far more stringent assessment in citizenship application as PRETENTIOUSLY FALSE AND OF ELECTION BAIT GIMMICKY, why is the GOIERNMENT GIVING AWAY SO MUCH ADVANTAGE AND PRIVILEGE to PRs at so much angst to citizenry.
This logic of RATIONALE does NOT add up – YOU DON’T GIVE FOREIGNERS SO MUCH GOODIES for nothing in return to SINGAPORE AS A NATION except in circumstances of irreponsible governance? SM Goh says foreign migration must “benefit” Singaporeans. How does this unlimited and unqualified altruism to foreigners with no prospects of sharing our future – either by their choice or our alleged stringent citizenship assessment – beneficial to Singaporeans??
I AM TOTALLY CONFOUND AND MYSTIFIED of political correctnesss of substance.
And if the majority does NOT qualify for citizenship, WHY DON’T WE GIVE THEM PEP ( Professional Employment Pass) saving a lot of benefits spending on them in Government subsidy at the costs of Singaporean taxpayers) instead of PR and let them upgrade to citizenship if they do finally qualify.
For PRs like Zhang Yuan Yuan who demonstrated loyalty for China ( it is okay)but not residing in Singapore and contributing to our economy, WHY DON’T THE GOVERNMENT CANCEL HER PR?
The logic of truth and the the logic of economics DO NOT ADD UP by the two seemingly contradictory Ministerial statements.
The Government has LOST DIRECTION in their population and economic policies??
I DON’T BELIEVE THE STATEMENTS.

“The government looks closely at permanent residents’ (PRs) contributions to Singapore before deciding which ones can become citizens…..So please put up with the new immigrants. We are very careful about who becomes a citizen.”
Firstly, it’s not just about who and how many become citizens. It’s also about who and how many become PRs and S-pass holders. Why does the ruling party keep worrying every single day about new immigrants when they couldn’t give two hoots to Singaporeans?
Secondly, how can someone tell such a blatant lie and hope to get away with it? Every Singaporean personally knows some PRs who became Singaporeans, and are fully aware of their background and “contributions to Singapore”. It’s very obvious to us whether the govt is “very careful about who becomes a citizen”.

No way the government is going to do anything to help us Singaporeans from here on. If you want to know the truth, they are telling us in a polite way to “EAT SHIT & DIE!” and “TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT”.
How difficult it was 15-20 years ago for a foreign professional (with a degree) to get a PR status in Singapore? They were rejected so many times after numerous applications and after so many years of trying… And now the govt gives it out like free cookies to any Tom, Dick & Harry from PRC, India and Philippines (no degree required). All it takes is only 2 months and you are granted not only a PR status but Singapore passport. And these people come here with their dirty habits and bring their shit here and so loud they talk on buses and lifts (and they are talking on handphone and shouting). They walk around like they are the master of this land. And not to mention they became so arrogant. Because of them, HDB resale prices went out of control and we have to suffer for that now? What’s going on?
In the past years the govt had to launch courtesy campaigns every now and then to teach Singapores to be courteous and social etiquette. We have come along away and achieved that but now the govt is telling us to accomodate these foreigners and their habits and rudeness (pushing people everywhere) and accepts their behaviours because of their FOreign talent.
My God! Us true blue Singaporeans are sinking (family is struggling, loss of jobs to these foreigners and in another corner there are the poor and needy people who needs help. What does our govt do instead? They pledge to spend $10 million dollars to welcome foreigners!! Got meaning or not?
Despite all these, Singaporeans continue to vote for them….. AWESOME! People, it’s all over now. We have no more hope. The Singapore that we knew and grew up in is gone totally. Trust me.

Whatever success Singapore enjoys is the result of citizens’ sacrifices and hard work.
Foreigners didn’t have to work for Singapore’s success.

Citizen 101 on Tue, 10th Nov 2009 1:27 am
Singapore Boy is right. The new foreigners will vote for PAP once they get their citizenship approved. Remember LJY himself told Singaporeans in no uncertain terms many years ago that “he who pays the piper calls the tune.”
Has anyone here ever wondered why you don’t see foreigners from India of Indonesia working in our coffee-shops or operating as stall holders ? Why do we only see China nationals engaging in these activities ? Obviously there are double standars. You can only compete with the lay Singaporeans only if you are China nationals – for all the others you will need work permits (or employment pass for the higher echelon staff).
It’s obviously LKY is propping up the Chinese component in our composite population for a political reason. This guy is full of trickery – he uses them all the time to fool the population. He had Goh Keng Swee, the then economic advisor to the the Lim Yew Hock government to sell off Christmas Island to Australia for US $1m to finance his near bankrupt economy (of which he was advisor. At the same time he influenced the unions to rise up against the colonial masters (Hock Lee Bus riots being one of the catalyst), and then have Goh Keng Swee switch camp to join his PAP using the failed economy and loss of Christmas Island as a weapon to defeat Lim Yew Hock at the 1959 elections.
Again trickery was being used in 1986-7 when he concocted the myth that there was a Marxist plot to topple the government, as a result of which sacrificial lambs were led to the slaughter house. Those poor Christian folks didn’t have a chance to defend their innocence. This was being done because he had the misplaced conviction that the Catholic missions in the Philippines had been instrumental in bringing the downfall of a dictator and he was leaving his political fate to chance. Better be sure than be sorry – that has been his dictum.
It is better to be cruel and feared by the people rather than be hated by them. If they feared him his power would not be compromised ; if they hated him sooner or later some forces would remove him. That’s textbook Machiavellian philosophy, of which he is an expert practitioner. When its a bitter pill to swallow take it in one gulp ; when its goodies to distribute do them in instalments. Machiavelli taught that dispensing hard decisions in one swift blow is better because the popu;ace only need to suffer once, while the good effects of hand outs last longer if given over a few instalments as human tendency is to remember things that happen over a protracted period of time and one off sufferings are quickly forgotten. Now you know where that PAP government policy of giving GST credits, etc, over a series of instalments come from.

For those who are looking for a breather in the relentless influx of foreigners into Singapore, or hope that the MIW Government will look into citizens concerns on this issue, don’t hold your breath.
It ain’t gonna happen.
The main thrust of Great Leader’s speech last night is that not all PRs will be granted citizenship. Only those who can contribute to Singapore (GDP ??) will get the certificate.
That’s all there is to it… and we, the suffering old citizens of this sunny island, should just open our arms to welcome the ‘vetted’ new citizens of Singapore.
There were 1.2 million foreigners in Singapore last year.
You can bet your last dollar that there will be substantially more foreigners in Singapore if the PAP wins the next GE.
Never mind what the citizens want or how they feel about the foreign influx issue… the Great Leader knows what is best for Singapore.
A quote by the Great Man himself which says it all :
“I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn’t be here today. And I say without the slightest remorse, that we wouldn’t be here, we would not have made economic progress, if we had not intervened on very personal matters – who your neighbour is, how you live, the noise you make, how you spit, or what language you use. We decide what is right. Never mind what the people think.”

Re: “Despite all these, Singaporeans continue to vote for them….. AWESOME! People, it’s all over now. We have no more hope. The Singapore that we knew and grew up in is gone totally. Trust me.”
The problem with this is actually not about us voting them; it’s about the ability of our opposition parties. If there are serious contenders who are able to do the job, I believe Singaporeans are wise enough to choose the man to do it. However, to achieve this, we need to develop our kind of “democracy” to true democracy first.
Personally, I’ve nothing against MM Lee. After all, he’s the one who made today’s Singapore. But he needs to understand that tomorrow’s Singapore needs to be made by another person, and that person may not be one from his PAP. Thus the need for true democracy.
As for the issue on foreigners, I feel that we Singapore citizens should stay calm on the matter and reason things out rationally. Like many born in Singapore citizens, I am too displeased with the kind of treatment that barely differentiates us from PRs. But if we do want our voices to be heard, the very least we could do is not to be so aggressive in our choice of words. Don’t misinterpret me; we need strong voices in order to be heard, but not incendiary voices that could spark social turmoils.
As much as I wish that I could be as understanding as MM Lee puts in his article, I believe that if PRs are allowed to enjoy the current kind of treatment, at the very least, they should suffer the same things as we citizens are. National Service is just one of the matters. After all, isn’t it a joke to know that our population is increasing so rapidly while our army size per person is shrinking, however lethal it might be? There is no doubt that technologies help to bridge this problem, but these technologies are bridging the problem for every country who can afford to buy them. So if country A can double its “size” from e.g. 10 through certain technologies, country B with army size e.g. 20 can also do the same. Isn’t it even worse judging from the simple ratio 1:2 vs 1:4? Being lethal may not mean actual numbers, but if country A is shooting 10 missiles at country B while country B fires 40 anti-missiles, how high is the lethalness?
If national security is an issue, they could be posted under civil service such as NS policemen, isn’t it? We could then free up some of our native Singaporeans for our army.
All in all, the government should not only reach out to foreigners to drive our economy; the locals should also be reached. There should exist core differences between PRs and Citizens if we are to respect the rights of PRs to help their home country when in need; we really don’t want another ZYY issue coming up.

There is a way that we don’t have to bear with the high influx of foreigners and still be happy. When you can’t beat them, you join them.
I have tried this for sometime now and it works quite well for me. I tell myself that I am not a Singaporean but a PR in Singapore. I read every news from a PR perspective and it was fantastic to realise that as a “PR”, I am being treated so much better then Singaporeans.
When I go shopping, I remind myself that I am a tourist and behave like one and expect to be treated like one. Early this year, when I received my reservist notice, I told myself that I am a PR, hence I am exempted from NS and went all out to get a deferment. It was successful and I did not serve any reservist this year. I was over the moon. I will try to defer again next year.
By cutting off all your attachment with Singapore as a Singaporean, you will learn how much happier you will become. Needless to say, when there is trouble and the MIW wants Singaporeans to stand united, you can just book the first flight out of here and not feeling any sense of guilt. Tell yourself that you are not a Singaporean after all.
It works for me. Try it and see if it works for you.

Sometimes I wonder, if our leaders are singaporeans or not? All the policies seem to benefit the foreigners than us. Are we not even worth a cent from them? Are we so readily to be replaced by the communist China? What is surprising, after fighting the communist for so many years, now the govt is bringing them in by the tens of thousands.

Jiangbao Singapore will soon be an official vassal state of China, if it has not already been an overseas Chinese state already. Soon you and me and the rest of Singaporeans gotta sing praises for Chairman Mao every morning before school and work. Why do you think our ministers have to pay homage to China once every 2 years and pour in all those investment money? In the past they call it paying tribute to the Chinese emperor. Today it’s termed as investment in China.

“A $10 million Community Integration Fund was unveiled lately to make the newcomers feel “welcomed” in Singapore. Ironically, the fund is contributed unwittingly by Singapore taxpayers.”
SO DISTURBING! 10 million hard-earned dollars spent on a welcome party for foreign blood? Does the high-paying ministers forget how difficult it is for us common peasants to a living – and that many.. many of us will not make even a milion in our lifetimes!!!
RIDICULOUS!!!

I think we will soon be a citizen of china whereby singapore becames a state of China. So much about fighting communist and imprisoning them. Now my leaders love them so much…

The only way out is to give up your citizenship when you retire. Then go to a developing country to live. After 3 years, you will get back all your CPF monies.

//Jiangbo
Elites => the ruling elites and their families
1st Class => foreigners with talent and/or money
2nd Class => foreigners with money, no talent never mind
3rd Class => the rest, PRs, student pass holders, etc
4th Class => Singapore citizens?
Sometimes it is better to a second class citizen elsewhere than to be treated like shit and trampled on by your own government.

“An unknown substantial portion of the ministers’ million-dollar salary is pegged to Singapore’s GDP growth rates.”
It was already reported by mainstream media that about 25% of their salaries are pegged to economic growth.
TR wants to be credible, better do your basic research properly first, instead of injecting your skewed political agenda into every single article without basis.

….”It was already reported by mainstream media that about 25% of their salaries are pegged to economic growth….”
WOW THAT IS BIG NEWS TO ME.
So the next public policy priority is – TO FLOOD THIS PLACE TO 13 MILLION AND ADD TO THE GDP GROWTH AND INFLATE THEIR SALARY AS A NATURAL FORMULA DERIVATION.
And Singaporeans can all WALLOW IN MISERY thereafter.
Thank you Lalida, WE NOW KNOW EXACTLY WHY THE FANATICAL DRIVE FOR MASSIVE IMMIGRATION INFUSION AND WHICH WAY TO VOTE.
SINGAPOREANS WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Btw, TR articles are never skewed. It is your mind that is skewed or skewered over the BBQ stove. Now enjoy your meal!
