Sunday Times removed article on Singapore PR Zhang Yuanyuan taking part in China National Day parade
From our Correspondent
An article on the digital edition of the Sunday Times titled “Singapore PR took part in parade” has mysteriously disappeared!
The article which relates a Singapore PR by the name of Zhang Yuanyuan, who chose to return to Beijing and took part in China’s 60th National Day parade was still available in the morning of 4 October 2009 under the “Home” section, but by the afternoon, it was nowhere to be found:

Readers can still read the enlightening article on page 20 of the Sunday Times.
In an interview on CCTV Channel 7, Miss Zhang flashed her blue Singapore NRIC on the screen and later proclaimed proudly with a grin on her face that she returned to Beijing because it was her greatest desire to serve her motherland:

Despite spending four years in Singapore, her heart still belongs to China. The Chinese state media was quick to drum in the fact Ms Zhang has chosen to return to China though she had a cushy job in Singapore as if to announce to its own citizens that China has caught up with Singapore.
While her comments made her a famous patriot overnight in China with many Chinese netizens lauding her, they sparked a furore in Singapore cyberspace.

“Isn’t it obvious why the foreign talents (FT) are leaving Singapore ? Singapore is like a hotel, some FTs have finished with their business and are returning home taking their belongings and money. Others have upgraded themselves and found a new home in Canada, Australia, US,…You think the foreigners don’t know what’s waiting for them if they stay in Singapore. They only have to look at who the dish washers, toilet washers, void deck to see the future of Singaporeans.”
Devilwithin praised her decision to return to China:
“Smart move! She got a better chance with life in a big country with diverse economical developement than this tiny little red dot.”
kingrant is indignant that the ruling party is splurging millions of dollars to help foreigners integrate into Singapore society:
“So much for FTs – Flying Trash! To think that Singapore is spending $10 million to integrate the unintegratable! That is the trouble when we cannot hold the PAP regime to accountability! Let us throw them out! The whole lot!”
With rising disgruntlement from the ground against the ruling party’s liberal immigration policy, it is little wonder that the state media is quick to remove the disagreeable article which will fuel the resentment further.
Unfortunately, there is nothing they can do about the article in the printed version and the poor journalist who wrote the article will probably get rapped for it.

A slap in the face for Singapore ??
More like a slap in the face for the PAP Government and their “Welcome Foreigner Policy”.
… and truely deserved, if I may say so.
The lady probably came to study in Singapore under government grant. Her university education and her $4000 pay could easily have gone to a Singaporean.
Shitty Times were so arrogant back then without Internet that they think they can get away with anything under the guise of ‘honest mistakes’.
Whenever a mistake is made, just removed it and it goes away.
Come Internet and no more easy way out for them, just like ISD watching over Sinkaporeans, Sinkaporeans will be watching Shitty Times too.
Once caught, screen captured and they can deny their arse off without anyone believing them.
No more honest mistakes and sweeping under the carpets for them. Sinkaporeans should hold them accountable for every bit of thrash they published and watch them closely!
If they want to make millions, then expect them to deliver articles and quality that are worth millions.
I love chinagirls !!
Should have got this one before she went back to china !!
then she will want to come back to singapore for daddy !!
She is smart enough to leave S’pore.
Why would a sane foreigner/PR take up S’pore citizenship knowing how poorly S’pore govt treats its citizens??!!!
Dun worry “Old Guy”, there’s more from where she came from. She’s probably sent here by PRC to gain back some “face” for their country after “Gong Li” and “Jet Li” decided to settle here.
By playing to import or change New blood so they sure to win-win Election. This is a ver stupid way of doing.showing the PAP goverment as they put themself are the ememy of it own people.
they nerver trust their own people. In the 70’s family planning policy “Stop At Two” THey have murder the entire 1/2 million defendless innocent life. This end meet they known they have to pay their crime. So they in the hurry to change blood. They must pay for their crime they did.
Come on people, she is a PR and not a citizen here .
She may have accepted PR for whatever reasons.
Afterall , for people like her, its easy to get a pr.
She is a PROUD Citizen of CHINA.
I am proud that she displays her LOYALTY to the Mother Country.
Well done China Girl.
Million dollar minister splashes 10million dollars for FTs
to integrate with the locals.BTW where would you like us to
integrate with them? In the hawker centres, holiday resorts,
or 5-star hotels?
All the crap asked:
1. Million dollar minister splashes 10million dollars for FTs

integrate with them?
I would propose that the gahment setup a Hotel 69 for Sinkaporeans Males to ‘ENTERact’ with the China Meis Meis New Citizens and PRs, Free of Charge, of course!
//There is nothing wrong
What is doing is almost the equivalent of baring her breast on screen.
provocative.
No big deal lah.
She is NOT even SINGAPOREAN.
Many China people after become citizens, their heart still with CHina, not only Yuan Yuan, perhaps Li Jia Wei also the same.
To all those who say that she is NOT a singaporean and only a PR, you have brought up an interesting point.
The interesting point is that why does our govt always choose to lump PRs together with citizens in their statistics? And why do PRs receive just as good deals, if not better ones, from our govt?
Is our govt bending over backwards to attract and please these PRs, who ultimately maintain their loyalty to their original country? Why are we currying their favor at the expense of local-born CITIZENS?
She is just of out of the don’t know how many who come to Singapore to study under scholarship and return back to their country.
What does Singapore get to gain from all these? I only see that it deprive locals a chance to study in local Uni.
Well…
on top PM Mee Siam Mia Hum about not letting 30 – 50 years “new” citizens serve NS…40 – 50 i can still undertand due to age but still can do other type of NS [Civil Defense, Hospitals etc]…for those 30+ can still serve NS…i know of guys 30+ had to still serve NS…oh well…now this…
To those who mention she did nothing wrong…fine…she is a citizen of china…fine…she has gotten what she wanted from singapore and its citizens [who incidently] paid/subsidized her “education” in singapore and help her get ahead her peers [left in china] since she got a 4k jon in an MNC in singapore….but she got her blue NRIC…why did she flash it to the chinese media? …. it means not only the PAP gov’t is stupid as stupid does…it also indirectly means we the citizens of singapore are even more stupid…cos we support [not all of us] this stupid PAP gov’t and our continues to do stupidity policy makers…are these policy makers singaporeans in the 1st place or are they are trying to make singapore and its citizens be destroyed ultimately…
to me these are the real traitors of singapore…for allowing this kinda of folks like Ms Yuan Yuan into singapore at the expense of local citizens and past citizens who were born, bred, sacrifice and suffer in singapore.
The current government in singapore is a joke…
and the world in the know are laughing at them and at those die-hard PAP supporters in singapore.
So sad.
Don’t blame her. Blame the PAP! Your aim in life is to become a citizen in another country and come back to Singapore as a PR… just like her!
//skeptic
Come back as a PR for what?
what to do? it already happened :p
Just remember that they are happily making use of us because we are letting them do so…
when next GE swings around just remember this and all the other issues when casting your vote (…unless walkover AGAIN)

i do have to repeat this again. She IS a CHINESE CITIZEN. She is NOT singaporean. This PR issue is not so unique to singaporeans. many other countries such as US and canada face this PR problem too. Its just that.. i think those other countries protect their own citizens much more compared to us… and also make getting a PR in those countries rather difficult to obtain.
Although the poster “reader” brought up an interesting point about putting the statistics of PRs with citizens together.
Although i’m not totally against new immigrants and PRs (my parents were immigrants 30 years ago.. but i was born and bred here…)..i keep wondering about opening the doors to wide. i feel out of place in my own country.. which is a terrible feeling.
Hi Free Beer,
If you actually read our article carefully, you will realize that it is stated very clearly that the article on Zhang Yuanyuan taking part in China’s parade first appeared under the “Home” section in the morning, but was taken down in the afternoon. It is relegated to an inconspicuous subsection in an article “Iron Ladies” under the “World” section.
And in case you do not realize, besides The Straits Times, we have paid subscriptions to South China Morning Post, Malaysiakini, Wall Street Journal and the Economist as well.
Please read before shooting your mouth off and embarrassing yourself here again.
Since people like her have their loyalties lie with their motherland, going forward, I want our government to put into place a series of measures to ensure that economic and educational incentives are given to Singaporeans first.
I don’t think this is an unfair demand, especially when you see people like her gain more from being a Singaporean PR even while there are fellow Singaporeans who are being disadvantaged in terms of educational, employment opportunities.
Come to think of it, there isn’t really much of a difference between China and Singapore. It’s only another NDP, only on a much grander scale, performed in China. Had it not been the considerable distance between the two countries, I bet the pappies would gladly turn over sovereignty of this island to the PRC.
So, these are the “right type” of FTs that our PM is trying to attract & integrate to S’pore (& succeeded by his standards as an IC was even issued to her). I remember a foreign ASEAN scholar that pushed his GF into the path of an oncoming MRT train. The HR dept of the Singapore Inc. is sure doing a great job in recruiting and staffing matters!
Imagine, our ministers are so proud that supposedly “high hundreds” of foreign-born males are serving in NS. In a war, I suggest that the true Singaporeans walk behind them, rifles at the ready…..
A Singaporean’s vote will matter less in the next general elections.
The PAP is saying:
“GO ahead, vote for the opposition! We have enough China PRs to vote for PAP!”
So much for “Staying Together, Moving Ahead”

Don’t worry lah. What’s a few 1 000s from China and India? Look at Malaysia. It imports Quantity by the MILLIONS from Indonesia and life still goes on. At least we get to pick and choose the quality of the talent we want.
I shd know cos I was a Malaysian once.
Lim TK, do you mean we get to pick and choose the quality in those thousands of those foreign talent who walked Geylang every night? I am a regular there but can’t find any quality over the years.
Were you picking and choose or you take the cheapest, oldest and ugliest?
This foreign country called Singapore: It’s the same. Can’t deny the fact that our country has been shamed at the same time. But of course we know the real culprit, don’t we?
I’ve met many “Singaporeans” in Shanghai who were ex-Hong Konger who came to Singapore in the 1980s before the Handover of HK to China. These people carry a Singapore Passport but still behave like a HongKongers. They stayed like 5 years in Singapore and attended the best schools here before migrating to Australia or Canada to do their university and then back to HK with 2 passports. I don’t mind if the govt brings in high quality rich immigrants who has the money and knowledge to contribute to Singapore – but not the current lot of economic migrants who ends up competing for jobs at the bottom rungs of the ladder with Singaporeans.
I’m not surprised cause true colors don’t always come out. Face the fact. The foreigners/immigrants are in Singapore for the sake of money and leisure playground.
In order to ascertain one’s loyalty, we must ask them some simple questions about our country.
Do foreigners/immigrants know and understand the meaning in every word of our national anthem “Majulah Singapura”, which is in Malay language?
Do they actually know the sensitivity and culture of our locals?
Perhaps the real question we should ask Singapore government:
Why are you accepting foreigners/immigrants at the unnecessary expense of locals’ employment?
There are hundreds of thousands of Singaporeans who are PR in many countries in the world. I have never heard of locals questioning their rights to be there. Maybe we should stop foreigners coming into Singapore and Singaporeans from living abroad?
THE singapore government wanted to cover up the shit that they have produce, and not let the everyone to know. And immigrate that are so proud of their own country , they should ever left their own country, and get the resources from singapore.
FOR the point of view, they made the singapore government just like the most stupid clown.
THOSE who think they can achieve in the foreign policy, who willing welcome them with open heart, and now is the time to thought about it.
DO not take singapore for granted. ANother big failure in the PAP policy………..singaporean should consider to vote a better government.
oh… She is just a PR, not Singapore Citizen. It is unrealistic to question any foreigner who decides to go back her/his country. We need logic and common sense lah!!!
What’s wrong with returning to the Motherland to celebrate her most important day? Singapore is 70% Chinese and they should return to China to honour her. A Chinese is a Chinese and a Chinese ancestral homeland is CHINA. ALL CHINESE CAME FROM CHINA. Pure and simple.
