Singapore netizens sceptical about Singanews’ real agenda

From our Correspondent

Even before Singanews was officially launched, it has been attracting whispers and gossips around Singapore’s internet chatrooms about its real agenda.

Singanews is supposed to be Singapore’s latest online news portal to offer alternative viewpoints with an emphasis on “mainstream family values”.

It is owned by Singa Communications set up by ex Straits Times journalist Matthew Yap. The company already has about $90,000 in seed funding.

At the popular Sammyboy forum, netizens were quick to see through its veil of deception.

Wrote Scroobal:

“They still don’t get it. All they have to so is state that they are christian site but will attempt to be neutral and fair. Embarrasing when checks show that 40% of the investment company that the joker is from is owned by the same church that tried the first deception.”

Added Sneering Tree:

“This bunch of sanctimonious deceitful people should be put into their places. It’s one thing to come out in the open to say that they are going to champion thier own biblical “values”, it is another thing to downplay their religious leanings and pretend to speak for a majority that was already uncomfortable with their shady manoveurs (see AWARE incident).

As far as I know, there is no organized group claiming to speak for “secularist values”, ditto, Buddhist, Islamic values etc. They are the most organized and most intent on reshaping public and political spheres and yet they have the cheek to claim victimhood in their fight against a imaginary enemy.

There’s nothing wrong with having an agenda but to pretend not to have one- that’s the problem. The other problem is to pretend to speak for the majority when you are only speaking for yourselves.”

MarrickG managed to find out more about the religions of Singanews journalists:

“These are what I managed to find about some of the reporters…see any links?

PN Balji – Oh..he is a Hindu? He was the one that interviewed Josie Lau on the AWARE. He is pro-Thio throughout the whole saga. That is why someone commented any he was so diplomatic during the interview.http://akikonomu.blogspot.com/2009/0…ty-primer.html
http://temasekreview.com/?p=8033

Jeffrey Tsang – He is also a writer for The Saviour Times which is a magazine by COOS. The same church where Thio Su-Mein is in.
http://www.coos.org.sg/saviourtimes/…2005JulSep.pdf (See page 6)

Samuel Wong – Not sure if this is the same Samuel Wong but if it is, he is from the Pastor from Cornerstone Church in charge of Mandarin Affairs.
http://www.facebook.com/people/Samuel-Wong/529597383

Over at hardwarezone, forumers are equally sceptical about the real agenda of Singanews.

Said Thio Li Ban:

“With COOS behind the scene, Thio Su-Mein should also be one of the hidden hands within. This is why the group is not willing to disclose details of their fundings. Even if they do, the name list of donors could be altered.”

Puffywawa wondered if Singanews is another disguise:

“I really do not understand why they cannot live their own life happily but must make everybody else difficult. Just say your piece and that’s it. Why must repeat and repeat the same thing again and again? Now coming up with a news portal to disguise what they want to say.”

jaderman7 added:

“If they choose to participate in the public sphere, they should come out and plainly state they are a religious interest group and that will be that. All the obfuscation and clarifying that there is no Christian agenda is like michael jackson saying that he is not white. When their links are uncovered one by one, they will just look foolish.”

Artemov felt it’s another re-run of the Aware fiasco:

“It is as if they have not learn from the Aware fiasco. All these (not very subtle) subterfuge are not going to fool anyone in this age of the Internet. For all her intelligence and education, she seems blinded by her beliefs.”

It appears that Singanews will have a hard time winning over their detractors and critics. Given the public backlash they received the last round from the steeplejacking of Aware, Singaporeans will be in a less forgiving mood this time.

There’s nothing wrong in harboring a (religious) agenda, but what Singaporeans expect and demand is the basic honesty and decency to be open and upfront with it rather than to use the cloak of “mainstream values” to mask one’s real intentions.

  • cy:

MSM also likes to use “mainstream values” so singanews is just copying them.

  • csl:

I do not think people are comfortable with the “mainstream values” that borders on Fundamentalism. MSM like the ST for example like to gloss over details or use misleading headlines but they do not try to propagate Fundamentalism or spread views that are non-secular.

At the end of the day, the various religious groups are welcomed to set up shop and spread their “good word” but not under the guise of a news site.

In the wake of the announcement of the launch of SINGANEWS, The Temasek Review has over the last weekend, published a slew of articles (no less than 5 – see below) relating to this topic:

I wonder why your editor(s) has deemed this particular topic worthy of so much coverage.

In any case, your articles all tend towards a similar view (i.e. you are not fans of SINGANEWS promoters), so objective reporting is clearly not an aim of yours.

But objective reporting can be rather boring. I am all for having a view and expressing it. The Online Citizen and The Temasek Review are examples of alternative news media which have impressed me by giving alternative, robust and sometimes controversial opinions on current topics.

So I find it puzzling why some of your writers are getting worked up over the possibility that SINGANEWS may in fact have “an Agenda”. Is there a concern that SINGANEWS might give the unsuspecting public “slanted” reporting?

When is an opinionated article “biased” and when is it “alternative”? I suppose a view is rated “biased” when it does not agree with one’s view and rated “alternative, independent” when it does!

By the way, I have always been very curious about your name “The Temasek Review”, so I may as well ask now. Are you linked to the Temasek group of companies (Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund)?

How is The Temasek Review funded ???

  • Hoong Ann Chia:

    One of its mission statements:
“To provide accurate, truthful, fair and up-to-date news reports, views and insights on serious topical issues.”

People can write a mission statement.
The fact remains, you have to prove that you walk the talk.
The netizen should scrutinize this website.
I wonder what are the backgrounds of the CEO and all involved and who exactly is funding it.

There is an easy litmus test. When it is open, pose the most serious questions to them and see how they respond or if questions posed are not published or comments deleted.

Any unpublished or deleted comments should be posted to other blogs to inform the people. Just like how unpublished letters to MSM should be published in other blogs.

I think 1 day can prove how real is this site.

    They shall be tested. hahaha

  • alternative viewpoint? mainstream value?:

“Singanews is supposed to be Singapore’s latest online news portal to offer alternative viewpoints with an emphasis on “mainstream family values”. ”

The above idea sounds contradictory or close to contradictory. If it is mainstream, then it is not “alternative”, and vice versa. E.g. those Christian Right’s “mainstream value” is definitely against “alternative lifestyle and alternative value”.

Those who are relatively good writers (including some writers from Temasek Review) please submit your articles that defends/promotes “alternative lifestyles” and “alternative viewspoints” to SingaNews and see if they would publish it. ;p

  • Odie:

“In the wake of the announcement of the launch of SINGANEWS, The Temasek Review has over the last weekend, published a slew of articles (no less than 5 – see below) relating to this topic:”

Exactly my thoughts and the comments made
about the “Agenda” and Singanews’ promoting “Mainstream Fa,ily Values” has raised the ire of many here. So if any one can offer their views as to what their exactly are their thoughts on mainstream family values, perhaps the discussions will be more meaningful.

I suggest sinceTemasek Review seems to be publishing so much about Singanews, they should tell us their position on what they think should be acceptable mainstream family values to start the ball rolling. Or should such discussion be considered taboo?

  • Fong Hai Tong:

Though Singapore does not have Malaysiakini, it is wise in my opinion to have a “2100 The People Speak” 2100 全民開講 kind of system where intellectuals come together to debate, discuss and voice up . Through this arrangement, the people who may not be as well informed, educated nor as analytical and vocal and well articulated can learn from them and understand or see a clearer picture and decide for themselves based on the information provided.

have a look at the following example of how analytical these people are :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZjAfEoIQM8

These are also able to demonstrate they are non-partisan by criticising with logic both the ruling and opposition of taiwan.

I think TW is a very REAL system. People have their own opinions and not all are homogenous thinking.

No more relying on just the MSM for news and info. We need different views for analysis to reach more intellectual conclusion for ourselves.

We should ensure we have such a system in place.

  • Robox:

Mainstream. That’s the word that Singanews is appropriating to describe itself. Now, isn’t that also the word that extremists who occupy the ultraconservative-to-fascist band on the political spectrum always like to claim they are?

This is actually not inconsistent with an aspect of ultraconservative ideologies (which include conservatism, ultraconservatism, and fascism but not right-of-centre conservatism) where its proponents tend to hold one group up – usually themselves – as the ones whose values the rest of society should aspire to.

By taking a nice-sounding word like “mainstream” for themselves, what they attempt to do in effect is to leave the rest of us with no nice names to call ourselves; mainstream people are well balanced, and even perfectly-centred individuals not given to extremes.

    There are three fact-based reasons we should be rejecting Singanews claim of being ‘mainstream’;

    1. SPH and Mediacorp, where Singanews is drawing their ‘mainstream’ writers from, only reflect PAP thinking which the PAP has always wanted to be the thinking that would be characterized as the statistical norm in the Singapore population. That way, the PAP can then go on to claim that the statistical norm is also the “mainstream” view, which oh, just so happens to coincide with their political ideology. The people who are starting up Singanews have all of that same sense of arrogance about their moral superiority, “moral superiority” being the true subtext of the word “mainstream”.

    2. The PAP does in fact subscribe to a political ideology despite pious protestations to the contrary. That ideology is anywhere between ultraconservatism-to-fascism exactly like the Thio Li-ann-type Christians – this is a strictly academic view.

    3. However, ultraconservatism-to-fascism can by no stretch of the imagination be considered to be political *centrism*, which is the word we should actually be using instead of ‘mainstream’ in politics and political and socio-political news and commentary; centrism is *the* word that professional journalists use.

(One way to know if you are politically a centrist is to ask yourself if you are appealed to the practises of constitutionalism, the rule of law, and rationality in legislation and its enforcement. Does any of the above describe the PAP and its scions?)

We would all do ourselves and Singapore a favour by refusing to refer to the SPH and Mediacorp stables as the mainstream media (MSM). I’m going to start by referring to them as the UCM (or ultraconservative media when they are ultraconservative) or FM (or fascist media when they are being fascist); I hope others will join me.

We should not even be feeling bullied that we are ‘less than moral’ for not espousing any of the views by the ‘mainstream’ Singanews – the contempt that ‘mainstream’ people have for those not like them, and the punitive ill treatment that awaits their victims *cannot* be called moral.

    I’m proud that I’m a political liberal.

  • Idiot:

I think I agree with Robox not to call any media “mainstream”, for there are no such thing, even as there is no such thing as the “mainstream”. Everyone is unique and an individual. And even if a majority agrees to something it means nothing, even as once everyone thought the world was flat, until came Columbus. So “mainstream” can be something shortsighted, even false, discriminatory, dangerous and foolish.

Specifically one of the many dangers is someone pretending to be mainstream but actually imposing their views on you to brainwash or blind you in order to pursue their own agenda for their own benefits.

But having said that we must allow for many voices, even those claiming to be mainstream, for only then can such hidden agenda be exposed; for hypocrisy is very real: for those opposing mainstream may in turn be like the mainstream themselves, ie imposing their views on others, when the opportunity arises. For such is the depravity of human beings, that evil must be fought with evil.

  • Lets be fair to this Singanews andl et it launch, then the readers can decide if its going to be another Shitty Times or Thio’s mouth piece.
