Anwar Ibrahim urged SDP’s young guns to continue struggle against PAP at Malaysian by-election rally
From our Correspondent
The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP)’s Young Democrats were invited to observe the recently concluded by-election in Permatang Pasir, Penang by the Youth Wing of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) which was founded by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 1999 after his controversial sacking from the government by then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Anwar invited the SDP trio of Jarrod Luo, Mohammad Khalis and Mohammad Shamin to join him on stage at a PKR rally where he urged them to “keep up the struggle”.
PKR deputy youth chief, Mohd Faris Musa, also praised the Singapore Democrats for daring to take on the PAP.
Mr Shamsul Iskandar, Youth Chief of PKR told the SDP members:
“”PKR will always be supporting SDP in its journey. We always identify ourselves with groups that dare to challenge oppressive regimes. We hope to have more of such exchanges between the SDP and PKR in the future.”
SDP had established close links with PKR as early as 2001 when the fledging new party was still struggling to establish a foothold in Malaysia’s tough political landscape. One of the earliest PKR leaders to make contact with SDP is its Information Chief Tian Chua.
Tian Chua was a human rights activist before he joined PKR. He took part in many protests against the ruling coalition of Malaysia and was arrested a few times by the police, including being detained once under Malaysia’s draconian Internal Security Act.
Though he lost in 3 previous elections, Tian Chua finally won the Batu seat in the 2008 election in which PKR emerged as the strongest opposition party with 31 seats in the Malaysia Dewan Rakyat. Tian Chua urged Singapore to “work towards true and real democracy”.
When Dr Mahathir Mohamad sacked Anwar Ibrahim in 1999 on dubious charges of sodomy and corruption, then Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew jumped to his defence: “I would have felt disappointed if Goh (his successor) were to behave like Anwar too.”, he said.
Anwar was charged in court and jailed for 6 years before he was released by the congenial Tun Abdullah Badawi in 2004. PKR won only one seat in Anwar’s stronghold of Permatang Pauh in the 2004 elections and was written off as a viable political party by many observers including fellow opposition leaders.
However, Anwar staged a dramatic comeback by bringing the three disparate opposition parties, PKR, PAS and DAP under one umbrella to contest in the 2008 elections, triggering a political tsunami which saw the opposition won an unprecedented 82 seats in Parliament and wrestling 4 states from the ruling coalition including the two richest states of Penang and Selangor.
The Malaysian opposition’s incredible performance had sent shivers down the spines of the ruling PAP in Singapore. Two months ago, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew went on a 10-day tour of Malaysia in which he met many opposition leaders to learn more about the political situation and developments in Malaysia. He did not meet Anwar though.
While many young Singaporeans are hoping that the political tsunami in Malaysia will be replicated here, it is highly unlikely to happen in the near future as Singapore’s weak and divided opposition lacked an unifying figure in the stature of Anwar Ibrahim and Singaporeans have far lower political awareness and maturity compared to the Malaysians.

Wow SDP is really making some headway these past few months eh.. their website is the best among local opposition I think..
It is so typical of Chee Soon Juan and his SDP, always colluding with foreign forces against Singapore.
What next, get Singapore back into Malaysia once SDP comes to power (fat hope of course!).
Chee Soon Juan is a traitor, I will vote for other opposition parties but never never SDP!
This is something that I do not like – colluding with foreigners.
Hi opposed and MZ,
Such exchanges between political parties in different countries are common.
The YPAP sent a delegation to Malaysia not too long ago the MCA Wanita also came to Singapore.
The Workers’ Party sent a team to observe the DAP’s election rallies last year as well.
According to your definition, then both the PAP and WP are guilty of “colluding with foreigners” too.
We don’t really know if Anwar’s comment is at CSJ instigation. It might have been Anwar’s choice of a bogeyman. We don’t know, do we???
We have official diplomatic relationship with China but party to party relationship with Taiwan, does that alone made us a TRAITOR in the eyes of China??
Remember LHL went to Taiwan before becoming PM. It caused a stir in BJ BUT REALLY IT IS LOAD OF HYPERBOLE crap. Even MM met PKR leader recently and the Barisan not objecting.
Any big deal???
My great US political parties are strong enough not to collude with foreigners.
so LKY and co. meeting with PKR, PAS is “colluding with foreigners” LKY has also met with opposition parties of other countries. is he “colluding with foreigners”
LKY isn’t so stupid to be cutting off his nose to spite his face

Sure, exchanges between politicial parties is a common sight, but having an outside political party to called on SDP to continue their fight against the Singapore government is tantamount to interfering, not simply an exhange of ideas or opinions…did PAP goes to MCA and tell them to whack PKR out and for good, or tell PAS in Kelantan to continue with their fight against Barisan Nasional?
Now, if that’s not colluding with foreigners, what is it?
No lah cy, some people are just out to slam CSJ and SDP at all costs, even if they are hypocritical and have no logic in doing so.
They will say things like they will support any opposition but SDP and talk about JBJ but do you what JBJ said when he started Reform Party?
At 4:50 JBJ says, “If any Singaporean is happy with the system in Singapore at the moment… Shouldn’t come to us. Go and see Mr Chiam See Tong, or Low Thia Kiang, who are happy with the system.”
Here is the video evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJCpCzgbdk8
Ya ya, talk so much. You know Young PAP went to learn from Communist youth of China earlier this year? http://www.asiaone.com/News/Education/Story/A1Story20090303-125908.html
Anyway, I’m happy that PKR is encouraging SDP. It shows what SDP is capable of and their international standing.
The SDP is a laughing stock among the Singapore opposition parties. First, they have some guy who seems to love being sued off his pants. Then we have the guy’s sister who seemed addicted to getting sued off her pants. Afterwards, some commando-cum-law undergraduate-to-be takes over the youth wing. And now, getting Anwar to be their foghorn loud speaker! I wonder what’s next? A merger between SDP-PKR? Anything can happen. Then we’ll really have an abang-adek relationship with the goons up north.
Don’t waste my time, SDP! You’re finished!!
“Chee Soon Juan is a traitor, I will vote for other opposition parties but never never SDP!”
Yes. Me too!
Indeed he is. His 3 kids are studying here at taxpayers’ expense plus a host of others from utilities to housing at taxpayers’ expense.
I was so surprised to read in one of his sick books at a book shop (can’t be bothered to buy though) where he instigates our neighbour, Indonesia, to take on Singapore over the so-called money laundering nonsense by the Indonesians who invest here.
Darn ridiculous thing for a fellow Singaporean to do. Capital is mobile; if not here then Switzerland, HK, etc., right?
young pap are being trained to be communists!! overthrow pap now before pap turns singapore into a communist regime!
Singapore a “communist regime”? Yes, MM rode on one to grow the presnt FIRST WORLD COUNTRY. Any first world country in the communist league of nations today?
are u ok?
do u know our per caipta income and gini index in comparision with n. korea, russia or china.
pathetic. lack of knowledge. primary school?
Glad that SDP had gained the support of PKR. Looking at the comments from these IB scums means that SDP is the party that will threaten the position of PAP in the next election.
These examples these IB scums gave are cases of “PAP do can, SDP do cannot” Remember TBT on March 15? Only PAP can fart, oppositions cannot…
It is very amusing to see IB farting on this website. More farts coming your way.
The commentators want to bring up so much about the bankruptcy of CSJ. Well, according to LKY, its because he is a serious political opposition. So thank you for acknowledging CSJ’s high standing:
“If we had considered them serious political figures, we would not have kept them politically alive for so long. We could have bankrupt them earlier.”
- Lee Kuan Yew on political opposition, Straits Times, Sept 14 2003
