The new adventures of Josie and the pussycats

By Sam (from Sam’s blog)

Ms Josie Lau Meng Lee, or Mrs Alan Chin Yew Liang, a vice-president of consumer banking group cards and unsecured loans for DBS Bank, was elected President of the Association for Women’s Action and Research (AWARE).

DBS has stated it does not support its staff, given the responsibilities of being a top executive, to take upon such a leadership role.

Previously, DBS was embroiled in public relations nightmare when it adopted Focus on the Family as its charity. The charity is a global organisation, and is fundamentalist Christian. It was met with resistance by the sexual minority community here. See ST and Yawning Bread.

So who exactly is Josie Lau? A brief check with “Josie Lau” in the newspaper archives, reveal a previous career with the tourism board, but maybe there is another person who shares the same name. This “Josie” also loves to eat, according to a May 2, 2004, ST Lifestyle article.

The Straits Times is actually stoking the conspiracy for most of us. It has asked as to whether the newly appointed executive committee members of the women’s awareness group, are in any way connected.

At the most, and with the most spine-tingling of political correctness, we can be certain they are all connected by their motivation to serve and address women- and gender-related issues in Singapore.

But the press and blogosphere have picked up on the bread crumbs and suggested that there are other connections, although they can’t be formally or publically proven.

Well, for the moment, we know that Angela Thiang  works for Thio Su Mien (see here and here).

We know that the newly appointed AWARE president Josie Lau is married to the doctor of your morality, Dr Alan Chin Yew Liang. He writes to the press regularly, and a majority of his letters are very homophobic (see here and here and here).

The names mentioned belong to people who have publicly striven to dehumanise non-heterosexual sexual orientation, for instance reducing homosexuality to pathology or lifestyle/choice.

There are newer questions/suspicions now:

1) Why choose Josie Lau?

2) If so it seems, why is DBS distancing themselves from Josie Lau?

3) Is Josie Lau part of a “team”?

4) Why did the older members walk out? Of course, there’s the “pride and complacency” argument on the one hand; on the other hand, there’s the “disillusioned and pissed off with the takeover (tactics)” argument.

you should state upfront that the author of this post is not you, and give full credit to the blog that it is taken from, right in the beginning. this is what someone with integrity would do.

    Hi Joyce,

You must be new to this site.

The Fellowship section is meant specially for articles from external blogs.

We will make the necessary amendments for readers not familiar with our Fellowship concept.

Mind you, the old guards are recruiting pro-old guard members to out-vote the new exco at the EGM.

What is ironical is that they are employing the method they have accused the new guard of using, the devious sinister, sneaky method they so utterly condemned.

    That spells hypocrisy.

And for the sake of fairness which they have been crying father and mother over the past few days, perhaps they could volunteer information about the background and religious/sexual inclinations, work history, values, motives etc. of the old guard or their political affiliations, or what food they like, where they holiday, who their husbands/girlfriends are etc. the way they have done to the new ones.

  • shoestring:

As for the author of the article, according to some lady who lives in a glass castle, using “cat fight” is offensive, so “pussycats” will land you in hot water for sure.

hi admin, thanks for taking my concerns into account, i appreciate the byline that you have added into the article. you are right, i am new to the site, but i feel that there is always no harm in giving credit. besides, some of your fellowship articles already have these bylines. i think they are helpful regardless of how familiar a reader is with your site.

At the end of the day, this whole thing is about GAY RIGHTS, not WOMEN’s RIGHTS, human rights and definitely not your rights. If you do not agree with THEIR GAY Rights, you are then considered a homophobic by them….and a Christian. Do they care if they are using tactics that they screamed blue murder about? Do they care how many people they trample on to get their way? I don’t think so.

They scream about morality and values when it is convenient for them. They scream discrimination and intolerance when it is convenient for them.

And then they remind us that most homos are professionals with respectable jobs and their pink dollars are mighty. How is that discrimination?
And then they target religious groups for their religious teachings and call them names. They target individuals and organizations who support pro-family values and gang up against them. How is that tolerant?

And then when you look at cities like San Francisco and Canada, liberalizing homosexuals means gay parade, breaking down the institution of traditional marriage, allowing homosexual education in schools. Why are homosexuals such high AIDS risk group? Its because homosexuality is about sex and little else. How is that good values and morals?

SO homos, please don’t come bawling about how sneaky the new AWARE exco is. Don’t teach us discrimination when you are discriminating against what majority of Singaporeans believe in. Don’t teach us democracy when you cannot abide by the rules of democracy.

Once again, I will only vote for traditional values. So far I see alot of pro-homo blogs and articles from the political bloggers. I can understand that because of the injected homone, they scream louder but I cam getting the feeling that being pro-opposition means pro-homo, like being a supporter of feminist rights = supporter of homo rights. If this is the case, I will vote PAP anyday. I would rather live without my civil rights than without my morals.

    To Reader (12:58am):

I like it when people like you talk about how the new AWARE exco came into power through democratic and legitimate means. You are totally correct on that, but unfortunately that is totally beside the point.

The AWARE “takeover” is problematic, because the circumstances strongly suggest that the “takeover” was premeditated and purposeful.

If the “takeover” was intended for the continued championing of women rights (and nothing else), then it is still acceptable.

But IF the “takeover” was intended to champion “homophobic” beliefs or “traditional” values, then that would have nothing to do with the original mission statement of AWARE.

In other words, the new exco would be hijacking AWARE and using its brand name to accomplish motives totally different from the original ones. That is just not acceptable.

If conservatives wish to push for their traditional values, they should do so via their own channels or organizations. As a matter of fact, they are already doing that.

And just to correct certain misconceptions of yours:

“Why are homosexuals such high AIDS risk group? Its because homosexuality is about sex and little else. How is that good values and morals?”

High risk for AIDS has medically nothing to do with homosexuality and everything to do with sexual promiscuity. One can argue that homosexuals TEND to be sexually promiscuous but the problem still lies with sexual promiscuity itself. Do not mistake correlation for causation. Based on this reasoning, if there is anything we should try to discourage, it should ONLY be sexual promiscuity (both homosexual and heterosexual).

“Don’t teach us discrimination when you are discriminating against what majority of Singaporeans believe in.”

Discrimination is the biasing of others based on certain categories (in this case sexual orientation). I do not believe or observe that homosexuals treat heterosexuals differently and unfairly, or actively seek to alter their heterosexual orientation.

In contrast, it is actually the “traditional” group that discriminates against homosexuals by labeling them as deviant and seeking to change or marginalize them.

And let’s clear certain things up. A majority of Singaporeans being heterosexuals themselves is very DIFFERENT from a majority of Singaporeans thinking that homosexuality is plain wrong.

Our society will become more gracious and civilized if everybody can just keep their beliefs to themselves instead of forcing them on everyone else. If the homosexual behavior of others do not harm or hurt me or others in any way, I see no reason why I should have the right to infringe on their freedom of expression.

So, are the gays hiding something?

Aiyioh….AWARE is all about woman affair…so why there outcry about pro and anti gay??..strange leh!!!as I thought their focus should be all focus about supporting woman..like single mum etc…my opinion..seem old guard upset when new guard take over….look at Bush…Obama won the election and took over the presidency …so did the old guard George Bush
behave like the old guard of the AWARE…has no good intention for AWARE but personal glory and power.

Re: “Mind you, the old guards are recruiting pro-old guard members to out-vote the new exco at the EGM … That spells hypocrisy.”

What unnschooled views you obviously hold.

Get this once and for all: AWARE is a FEMINIST space founded on FEMINIST ideaology. Those who don’t espouse feminism do not – I repeat, DO NOT – have the credentials to be doing the work of a feminist organization.

(Do you think that someone who doesn’t have the credentials for accountancy, say, should be be charged with attending to a company’s books?)

It is they who don’t have any business in AWARE; they could just as easily spread their toxic ideology from their own organization.

The old guard is merely reclaiming the space that belongs correctly to feminists; AWARE was founded with that knowledge by ALL Singaporeans, including the government that registered them.

To the others who think that this is not a gay issue:

Again the problem lies with being unschooled about the overlap in gay and feminist issues.
