What netizens can learn from the AWARE incident to keep our net free and independent

Other Brotherhood essays on AWARE: The day DBS read, “Don’t Be Silly! Volunteering is hazardous to your career!

Written by Darkness of the brotherhood – I don’t know whether any of you are aware of what happened to AWARE recently – to cut a very long story short; it goes something like the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor – result: the old guard found themselves out in the streets; swapped out by a group of incumbents that came in from the sun – if you really want to know the details, do check this out, “Unknown Beats Veterans”.

Well first of all; let me just say – I’ve never even heard of AWARE till now, so what they do is really a matter that doesn’t really interest me in the slightest – from what I understand, they’re basically a female version of Yawning Bread (again, I could be wrong, as I’ve never ever read any of his stuff before, so if I mangle up the facts here – I am sorry)

My interest in what has happened to AWARE recently is basically ONLY this: what can we as netizens learn from this entire episode? How can we prevent a similar thing from happening in blogosphere?

To answer this question – it pays to dwell deeper in how a group of incumbents managed to blindside the whole leadership committee of AWARE and seize the levers of power so skillfully.

Granted, may look like sand box politics – but to the practiced eye, it bears all the hallmarks of a well organized power grab.

The mood of befuddlement and disbelief following this surprise caper is only too evident – prognosis: none of the old guards even saw it coming; they were completely blindsided and taken for six. See for yourself, if you don’t believe me:

How could a new member who had just joined for a couple of months, and whom we knew nothing about, be picked over someone who has been with Aware for more than 15 years?’ – Dana Lam an ex-Aware President.

‘We found that about 80 of the 102 who turned up were new members who joined between January and March this year.’ – Ms Tan Joo Hymn, another ex-President, commenting on the attendees of the AGM.

Mmmm….were the old guards just plain naïve? Were they perhaps even slightly complacent in their sense of security? That to me is really a sterile debate.

To me if you leave your back door open – then you’re fair game – you have no one to blame but yourself.

For our learning outcome on how to prevent this from ever happening in blogosphere –  the AWARE incident illustrates how the rule by statistical majority can be so easily weaponized to facilitate a surprise power grab – the best part was; it was even transacted constitutionally and according to the rules of the game i.e it’s kosher, nothing underhanded about it even – I took the trouble to check it off with Missy Dotty and she had this to say, ” they did it by the book.”

The lessons for all of us netizens are ONLY too clear – it doesn’t pay in the long run to create a committee to represent blogoland, if the imperative is to keep the internet free – that idea could really ONLY work, if you didn’t know democracy as an idea can all too easily facilitate a form of tyranny by leveraging on the power of the statistical majority

As the AWARE case study illustrates only too clearly what can and did happen when the old guards let their force sheild down – in other words, they became so bovine and complacent; they never once entertained the possibility of getting swapped out as even theoretical possibility. In short they left the back door wide open; and is it such a wonder a group of incumbents came in from sun and took them for six.

As I said, there are valuable lessons to be gleaned here - as I happen to know a whole lot about the art of war – infact, I’ve planned at least sixty campaigns to overun planets in the virtual, lost only two and in many cases even taken on forces 3 to 4 times bigger and better equiped – and let me share with you all a trade secret in warcraft: one of the best defense against an invasion is to keep everything up in the air – keeping it all formless, structureless and if possible even headless is key – and it remains one of the best defenses against being overunned, co-opted, unionized and getting the rug pulled under one’s feet – that’s one reason why the Russians were able to successfully blunt both Napolean’s and Hitler’s invasion – they used the vast Russian steppes to good effect - frequently drawing the enemy deeper and deeper in the gyre; all the while lulling them into a false sense of confidence by holding out the promise of victory on the cheap - everytime, they took a town, the Russians razed it to the ground – everytime, they encircled an army, the best divisions hightailed off – eventually the war of attrition left those invading armies with nothing except twigs and insects for grub; then the elements finished them off and they became easy pickings.

The lessons history holds out and what happened recently to AWARE are stark reminders – what can and will happen, when a group of people let their guard down; and that should prompt us all to be more mindful when some thing too good comes along – as it’s probably too good to be true; matters little what’s for sale; could be a blogo committee claiming to seed the good and drive out the bad currency in our net or some dream team who holds out the promise of leading us all to some mythical Jerusalem – my point is simply this: the risk of putting all the eggs into one basket; one structure; one hegemony; one group of people is never worth the risk despite the promise it holds out - as I said, it doesn’t always pay to assume a shape and form; not when so much is at stake; makes far more sense to break up the whole idea of power by assuming some shapeless glob like a fog, rather than fashioning a giant sitting duck - better still keep it all chaotic and in a constant state of flux – that should guarantee plenty of dead ends and hall of mirrors for anyone who thinks they can just come in and impose their reality on all of us.

That’s the strategic and tactical lessons that I gathered from this recent AWARE debacle.

Whatever these new changes bring for AWARE, I hope the new leaders will work for the interests of women folk without marginalizing anyone – that’s really the best we can all hope for, the day after the tanks roll in – that, I am afraid is as good as it will ever get - like I said, what did you really expect; when you leave the back door wide open?

It’s game over.

I am so sorry. Really I am.

hi, i’ve updated the list of links on my blog, which happened to be almost similar in ordering as on this page. don’t forget the link mentioned in the middle of my article too, you missed that out. can any effort of content aggregation be cited/attributed? :)

  • Many people have been voicing their concern about the impact of the new exco on AWARE’s existing programmes, especially where things like Sexuality are concerned.

For those of you who have been following my blog, you will have noticed I’m very active in this programme, and so is Caris Lim, one of the old-timers who was re-elected.

I will assure everyone, that as long as I am involved, I will always make sure that only secular, responsible and non-discriminatory messages are being put across.

I sincerely hope that supporters of secular, responsible and non-discriminatory education of any subject, will continue to support AWARE, and to let others know that we are still committed to this vision. There are many people who might not be in the exco, but we are the ones making sure this programme works and that it is being carried out. We do face prejudice from the conservative factions of society, and we hope that the enlightened people will continue to support us, instead of simply writing us off, because they have been scared off by an ST report about an unusal AGM outcome.

If we lose your support, then perhaps, what the ST report would have achieved, is the damaging of the credibility and effectiveness of AWARE, more than anything itself. In Singapore, platforms for non-governmental alternative voices are few and far between, and we need united support from all who share the same philosophy, in order to speak with a louder voice.

“Many people have been voicing their concern about the impact of the new exco on AWARE’s existing programmes, especially where things like Sexuality are concerned.”

That has to be an understatement of the year Mathialee. But what did you really expect when a question from the floor about sexuality and religious affliation was quickly brushed off by one of the new exco members as “irrelevant.”

“If we lose your support, then perhaps, what the ST report would have achieved, is the damaging of the credibility and effectiveness of AWARE, more than anything itself. You will lose support NOT bc of ST. You will lose support bc many questions have been directed to this new exco concerning their religious affliation and so far no press release has been coming.

So far I think folk like the brotherhood are neutral. But they are not beyond persuasion. As the pressure mounts. Many of their readers and even writers such as Missy Dotty will expect them to take a firm position. Eventually, they will have to take sides. And when they do finally decide to take a position. Do you really think they give a damn about your so called, philosophy or voice. You better provide us all with answers Mathialee. The questions asked of the new exco should be answered.

  • lassie:

Nevermind. Its pointless talking to this new EXCO members. All they will say is this is not relevant that is not important and so on and so forth.

I am very good at complaining. So I am going to sit down for 2 hours now and write a long letter of complain directly to darkness. Then I will write to missy dotty to ask her to tekan him. And after I have finished there, I will write to each individual read club leader, requesting them to do the same. And once darkness reads all of this. He will certainly put everything back the way it used to be.

  • JK:

Why are news reports and blog posts/comments on the new Aware leadership focused on gay/homosexual issues? Why are the new leaders labeled as anti-gay?

Was/is AWARE a gay organization? Were/are most women-related issues just its “side dishes” and gay rights the “main dish”?

  • Darth Pokey:

old farts whining that they got snookered by more enterprising organised noobs in the club. what it tells us, it is easy to pull the rug from under their fat feet. just vote.

  • Robox:

    To JK:

Re: “Why are news reports and blog posts/comments on the new Aware leadership focused on gay/homosexual issues?”

The reason for that is AWARE conducts sex and sexuality education that are not discriminatory towards gays and lesbians.

AWARE will have none of that, never mind that they already have Focus on the Family to disseminate non-factual information about gay sexuality in the guise of sex ed in schools.

It is clear that AWARE has a totalitarian agenda; they want to lay the groundwork in the schools today to ensure that future generations grow up homophobic and they hijack all the available spaces – even though they should be respecting a feminist space as unavailable for their agenda – to advance their goal.

Some of the new AWARE leaders have already established their credentials as anti-gay with their letters to the Straight Times.

Wouldn’t you conclude that the new AWARE exco members are anti-gay then?

  • wakeUp:

This smells a little fishy and too much of a coincidence. Sounds like a hijack… a rule-abiding but not exactly honorable takeover. AWARE should have had a clause in their constitution saying something like only members who have joined for x months have a right to vote. Whatever the case, I hope the new AWARE team stays true to its mission despite its affiliations. If not, it’s up to believers of the old AWARE to kickstart a new movement. Only the ones involved in the “conspiracy” will know for certain if this was a conspiracy.

  • anonmouser II:

Aware should have been more on their toes. One thing I have noticed abt the brotherhood in the virtual is. One reason why they can usually defeat bigger opponents, is they are very good at anticipating their attack plans and even pre-empting them. For example, if a group of miners in some planet are planning to stage a coup. Brotherhood allies will pick it up. They will put a big space station to monitor all activities there. When the coup is staged. They know who the leaders are, right down to the chain of command, network and even strategy.

As I said, aware should have been more aware.

  • REMF:

I am astounded that a staid organisation like AWARE can be so easily blind-sided with newbies performing the time-honored technique of Tyranny of the Majority.

Don’t they read-up on the Communist technique (even mentioned in MM memiors as to why they stop branch offcies from electing new leaders)

1 – Infiltrate a branch office with a handful of cadres.
2 – Abide the time as knowing the apathetic majority decided not to turn-up.
3 – With just a handful of dedicated hardcored communists, they win the branch officie election easily as the apathetic majority simply cna’t be bothered to turn-up.

And that is exactly how AWARE fell to just a handful of committed newbies when the apathetic hundreds did not bothered to turn up at AGM.

AWARE membership roll – 100 or 1,000 or a few thousands?

  • Robox:

anonmouser II, I think that what can be done by AWARE if the extraordinary general meeting turns out the way I hope it does, is to institute policy so that this can never happen again.

I’ve heard of organizations – not in Singapore – in which you can only run for exco if you fulfil conditions like having worked or volunteered in the organization before.

That way the organization knows who are you and what you stand for.

And what pre-raid AWARE was is a feminist organization that stands for non-discrimination on any grounds, including sexual orientation.
