David Widjaja’s “suicide”: Separating the facts from the myths in the NTU “stabbing” tragedy
By Eugene Yeo and Shawn Tay
It has been nearly a week since the tragic incident at NTU in which a Indonesian Chinese student David Widjaja was alleged to have stabbed his professor before committing suicide by plunging from six storeys now.
Is this the truth of what really happened or merely a myth concocted by the mainstream media?
With no further information released by the police, the Professor involved and NTU, the final verdict on what exactly happened is still out there.
Don’t forget that the police and the forensic pathologist (an autopsy was done on David before he was cremated) are still investigating and case. The only first hand information about the incident came from Professor Chan himself who was obtained by NTU President Dr Su Guanning during his visit to hospital after Chan was warded.
Yet, the mainstream media – both the English and Chinese dailies are able to spin a nice fairy tale out of such patchy information to proclaim the verdict on David – that he was stressed out, suffered a mental breakdown, stabbed his professor and committed suicide out of guilt.
Let us revisit these 10 myths propagated by the media and demonlish them one by one:

Myth #1: David brought the knife to Professor Chan’s office.
FACT: Nobody saw David bringing a knife to the professor’s office. In fact, according to some friends of David, the professor kept a knife in his cupboard for cutting fruits. There should still be fingernails left on the knife’s handle. If David is the alleged attacker, only his fingerprints should be found on it.

Myth #2: Professor Chan was attacked by David when his back was turned against him.
FACT: This was Professor Chan’s account given to the media by NTU President Dr Su Guanning who obtained it from Prof Chan behind closed doors. As there were only Prof Chan and David in the room at the time of the incident, nobody knew what happened exactly.

Myth #3: Professor Chan did not retaliate and tried to prevent David from slashing his own wrists.
FACT: Again, there were no eye witnesses to verify Prof Chan’s claims. Professor Chan claimed he tried holding the knife to prevent Widjaja from slashing his own wrists, but Widjaja’s parents and friends did not see any wounds on his wrists. Instead, there were cuts noted on his neck. From the mess we see in the photo of Prof Chan’s office above in the aftermath of the incident, it is quite obvious that a struggle must have taken place.Whose account is correct? Who slash Widjaja’s neck? Is it possible that the injuries are self-inflicted? Could Widjaja have cut his carotid artery, a major blood vessel in the neck which caused him to lose consciousness from profuse bleeding and fell down to the ground?

Myth #4: David slashed his wrists before plunging to his death.
FACT: David’s family and friends did not see any injuries at the wrists. There were unexplained cuts on his neck. There were no eye-witnesses at the scene who saw David slashing his wrist and jumping down to his death.

Myth #5: David was depressed and traumatized over the termination of his scholarship.
FACT: David was informed of the scholarship termination way back in January. His family told him it was okay and they will continue to support him till his graduation. There was no evidence to suggest that he was depressed or troubled till a week before the incident when it was reported that he stopped talking to his friends suddenly. No record in Student Counselling Centre about his attendance. A close friend of David said: “I was his roommate for 2 consecutive years during Mathematical Olympiad training camp. He almost did notqualify for IMO, only managed to get at 14th rank from 15 people selected. He still joked and laughed to me at that time. He also did not get anything
from IMO and still fine, not seemed depressed.”

Myth #6: David was angry with his professor for failing his Final Year Project.
FACT: The project is not due to be submitted yet. The Professor does not have the right to release the result prematurely to David. He will only be informed at the end of the school term. It is also NTU policy not to inform the student about the grade which they got before release of the result. David’s brother and friends described him as a quiet, soft-spoken and polite man who seldom get angry. They find it hard to believe that he actually took a knife to stab another man.

Myth #7: David beared a grudge against his professor and was planning to kill him.
FACT: David was still playing Hammerfall game in Facebook at 2 am on the day of the incident. A friend saw his Facebook account online. If the attack was premediated, he would probably be planning how to carry out his plan. According to one of his friend in an Indonesian forum, he was seen carrying a backpack fillled with books before the incident. Why would somebody bring his study materials along if he really wanted to kill his professor and then ending his own life? The above photo shows David’s room in NTU hostel, do you notice anything amiss?

Myth #8: David was a loner with few friends.
FACT: David has many close friends in both real life and cyberspace where he is a well-known gamer using the moniker “Majin”. Friends described him as a kind, helpful and sincere friend who is always willing to lend a listening ear to their problems. The above is a screenshot taken from “Destiny” where gamers pay tribute to David. Note the big words “We love Majin”. Read the comments left here by his fellow gamers. Do you still have the impression of him as a troubled youth after reading them?

Myth #9: David committed suicide after stabbing the professor
FACT: Nobody saw David stabbing the professor. The only official statement from police is: David was found dead at the scene, there was no mention if he had commited suicide. Did he fall to the ground accidentally because he lost consciousness from losing too much blood from his wounds or did he really jump down? If he were to commit suicide why jump to the roof top first and sat there? Why not jump straight down immediately?
Myth #10: NTU has given all the assistance it could to Widjaja’s family
FACT: For whatever reasons only known to itself, NTU stopped Widjaja’s family from meeting Professor Chan. They were told that Prof Chan was in critical condition, but the papers reported that he was in stable condition after surgery on the same day and was discharged 3 days later. NTU has no right to stop Widjaja’s parents from finding out the truth about the exact circumstances leading to their child’s death.
Based on the information we know at hand so far, we can only deduce the following reasonably:
1. Widjaja went to Professor Chan’s office on the morning of 2nd March 2009 to discuss his Final Year Project. He would not have known his grade for the project.
2. Something happened in Professor Chan’s office.
3. Widjaja was seen running out of the office.
4. Professor Chan was found to be bleeding and was attended by passer-bys.
5. Widjaja was found sitting at the roof-top.
6. Minutes later, his body was found on the ground.

Just a wild guess why MSM has to protect NTU’s reputation.
2010 is YOG year, and the NTU will be where the participants will stay. If NTU’s reputation is down, what do you think the world will think of our YOG. This will then be a poor reflection on the singapore govt.
If your guess is true, then that would really be a poor reflection of the Singapore government. Covering up the truth for the sake of reputation is utterly despicable.
I hope we won’t stoop that low.

I think it’s kinda strange, their family said, no injuries were found in David’s hand, but they found a lot of injuries in his back. They also said if they can’t saw David’s body from the coffin, only his head to neck were shown. Isn’t that kinda strange? I don’t think that’s the regulation in Singapore, they’re his family, so they should be allowed to watch their beloved family for the last time. And, 5 days later, a teacher in NTU also found dead. He also learn in the same subject with David when he was studying in NTU…….
Our media has proven to mislead Singaporeans…if this is a politcal story, long been sued by Govt for defamation, slander, misrepresentation…
I believe he really stabbed the lecturer and i also believe the lecturer must have done something to him-
I also believe he was not mentally illness or stress
Let’s wait for the police report before we jump into any conclusion. We should all know by now that the media cannot be trusted completely…
I posted two long comments about what I think about this case. How come they are gone?
Hi JohnnyKid,
We are sorry they are probably lost during the server migration. Please repost the gist of it again. Thanks.
neither can the police and what’s going to be on the police report…
This is typical of the beautiful system we live in… guilty till proven innocent.
This young man is gone. A promising young life lost.
And what are we doing? We (MSM, NTU and whoever else) are still beating the dead horse, trying to paint this young man as a villain and NTU as not being at fault.
Our MSM are a bunch of complete f**k ups. If it is NOT A FACT, DON’T REPORT IT. They would NEVER do it to the government (report a non-fact) but the double standard exists for everything that is non government. Simply disgraceful… simply worthy of their 144th position.
Ya, sensible questions to ask in your article, admin. Have to wait for the police report once they finish their investigations.
Whatever it is, it is so sad to see such a promising young man dying like that.
Realised something? Bad things happened before Beijing Olympics 2008
and now it’s happening to Singapore as the YOG 2010 is coming..
The only problem I have with your article is the use of the word “myth”. Myth means proven false. None of the statements in your article have been proven true or false yet. Your article is about raising suspicions about what has been reported, and it is enough to call these objectionable points. You cannot “demolish” anything when you have no facts yet, just questions.
The second point is, I hope you understand that this is somebody’s son/friend/brother who has died. Your article is publicly accessible. Perhaps your intention is to seek some form of justice, but before the actual investigation is fully completed, is it right to use such a confident tone in an article that is mainly speculation?
NTU is scared, Government is afraid.
That’s all. Nothing else.
How could the government ask NTU not to show David’s entire body. Everything on the media right now is absolutely bullshit.
Shutting mouths is the best and simple way of preventing the truth from being revealed. Media will keep launching junks unless SG Government realize of their moral joke
[...] NTU killing/suicide facts/myth [...]
Another myth…
#1: David was disoriented due to loss of blood that he sat on the rooftop and accidentally fell.
question: wait a minute, if he’s dizzy because of loss of blood, how could he climbed out to the rooftop in the first place?
I agree with you Nona….
How can we know the truth, if the police itself cover the whole investigation??? If they do this for reputation, shame on you..
NTU is gov univ.. of course gov have to control every situation that will bring them down… Fire and jail that stupid as* prof.. Don’t make such a lie to cover your dirty intention..
Sing gov will be nothing more than a small country with its big bullsh*t inside..
hey is tht the pic of his room? i dunno the case too well… im shocked suddenly in my fb theres a group… in memories of him… i dunno him… but he’s indo chinese like me too… so my condolences for his family… btw the room is really weird… isnt some1 who’s gonna commit suicide gonna clean his room first? or at least throw all the trashes? or at least his food… turn off the laptop etc… maybe even at least not put his clothes like tht… n yea no handle… how come? he took it? for wat? unless there’s fingerprints thts not his on the handle… its possible the suspect took it… since its better than wipe t clean… (david’s fingerprint also gone then) n he got stabbed on his back? how come? if he’s the suspect… then he holds the knife… n he cant possibly stab himself on his back…
n he wore glasses i think… did he wear it wen he fell? if yes… then its definitely suicide. almost all suiciders will take off his glasses first b4 commit suicide. why? because its their good bye of ths world. and those who commit suicide means coward. they can’t face the death. that’s why they choose the easy part. suicide, faster n lethal. means he should have took off his glasses… can anyone tell me the exact case please? i really wanna know… lots of my friends r in ntu…
i just read bout the info… means no one actually see if he jumped or not right? and no one actually knows what happen in the office right? so.. why not asking the prof? and even if he did commit suicide still there’s a reason for that. whether the prof bullied him by failing his FYP or anything right? so the police shoudl still investigating the prof. even if he claimed as a victim in this case. he said David stabbed him? who can prove that? it’s his words against David’s who’s just happen to be dead after that. and still there’s that knife handle. And if David did commit suicide, why the hell he still brings books, water and towel? he wants to die. so why bother to bring anything? and no one knows the fact for sure…
DONT FORGET! There was a witness, a matured woman who heared David SCREAMED “Help! They want to kill me… They want to kill me…”
Thanks Man,
You did this writing really well.
I believe that he really killed himself… really
singapore…… FuLL OF ASSHOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! and fuc**ng liar!!! you stink bitch…..
