Written by Our Correspondent Despite his public apology, angry netizens still flock to give a piece of their mind on the Facebook of Lighthouse Evangelism Senior Pastor Rony Tan: Pastor Tan sparked a massive outcry in cyberspace lately with his insensitive remarks about Buddhism made during a church session which was video-recorded and uploaded initially on his own personal website. He was subsequently called up by the Internal Security Department (ISD) for questioning which led to him apologizing for the remarks on his website. It appears that not many netizens are willing to forgive him and move on judging from their immediate response: The comments ...
GIC may have lost more than SGD$10 billion dollars (on paper) in its UBS investment as of now
Written by Our Correspondent Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) may have suffered a paper loss of more than SGD $10 billion dollars in its investment in Swiss bank UBS as of now. In December 2007, GIC agreed to invest 11 billion francs in mandatory convertible notes issued by UBS. The mandatory conversion feature of the notes held by GIC means that they must be exchanged for UBS shares by the time they mature on March 5, 2010 - two years after the notes were first issued. GIC's 11 billion franc investment means that it would receive some 228.83 million ...

Investment in UBS by GIC – a Chronicle of a Disaster in the Making
By Damon Yeo It was mid-December 2007 [A] when the Government of Singapore Investment Corp. (GIC) made a whooping 11 billion Swiss francs (S$13.8 billion) investment in UBS. There was news earlier in the summer of 2007 about how the US housing market was showing signs of slowing down, but some of the major financial institutions were still raking in record profits and numerous equity indices were nearing their all-time highs. UBS was amongst the first of the banks to show signs of cracking. A day before GIC announced its investment, the bank had just announced a write-down of US$10billion[1] and the money ...
Sentosa IR hiring card dealers in Taiwan
Written by Our Correspondent According to a Straits Times report today, Resort World Sentosa (RWS) will be hiring 150 card dealers in Taiwan who are expected to be paid around $1,800 monthly. The advertisement was posted on Taiwan's 1111 Job Bank website. RWS spokesman Robin Goh told the Straits Times that RWS remained "highly committed" to hiring locals as its priority which includes both citizens and PRs. About 70 per cent of the nearly 7,000 staff on RWS's payroll are locals. The quoted figure is irrelevant as it does not give an exact breakdown of the percentage of Singapore citizens. Foreign workers can be fast-tracked ...
Time for Singapore opposition to come up with a Common Policy Framework
OPINION The next general election will be a watershed in the history of Singapore. With young Singaporeans joining the electorate and public sentiments turning against the ruling PAP, the opposition stands a fighting chance of denying the PAP its traditional two-third majority in Parliament. An increasing number of Singaporeans including even PAP supporters are starting to accept the idea of a two-party system to ensure the continuing survival and prosperity of Singapore. Being a small nation without any natural resources, human resource is our greatest asset. We need not only one strong ruling party, but one credible opposition or government-in-waiting as well ready ...
